I've searched this newsgroup and can't find answer. Probably a very simple
questions. Pulled old Lionel 2-6-4 engine & train out of storage. When I
put engine on track and turn on transformer, the engine takes off real fast.
The red reverse switch on the transformer does not work and the whistle also
does not work. When I unplug and plug it in again, the engine goes to stop,
unplug again and plug in again, it goes in reverse. I tried a lower voltage
and the train didn't move. Also, the lever to increase and decrease speed
does not work. Would this be a problem with the transformer? Track?
Appreciate any help or comments.
thanks

It is might be the transformer. The loco's E unit (reverser)is working
normally. If you give the model number of the transformer, someone might be
able to help with more specific directions than I can.
When you first hooked the track to the transformer, you put the wires on the
constant voltage terminals.
If you have a voltmeter, check the voltage between each terminal and the U
terminal to see what voltage each one gives. If there is no reading, try
moving the lever and see if that works.

Oh dear. It's been a long time since I've played with this train. I wasn't
hooking up one end of the track wire to the "U" connection on the
transformer. I was following the lines on the back of the transformer
corresponding to different voltages. Once I hooked up one wire to "U", it
worked.
By mentioning the "U" terminal, you helped me fix the problem. Thanks very
much. I probably just woke up my wife with the whistle. Oh well, she'll
get over it.

Glad I could help. It has been a long time since I traded in my O27 for HO,
but some things I remember.

Lionel O And O-27 locomotives utilized a directional contol based on a
forward - stop - reverse - stop - forward - etc. sequence. Pushing the
reverse button will cause a momentary break in current which initiates
the sequence. Unplugging the transformer will do the same thing.
The Lionel locos of my youth all had a metal tab on top which enabled
one to disengage the sequence reverse. You might wish to do this when,
of course, your engine is in the *forward* mode. IMHO, however, the
best solution would be to purchase a new transformer. High speed and
lack of control sounds as if no reduction in house voltage is
occurring. This could lead to overheating of the locomotive and
subsequent damage to same. HTH.
