Seeing no need to repeat the spammer's commercial for him, I didn't quote
any of the message I replied to;  a properly used modern news reader will
allow you to view messages in thread order thus revealing what message was
replied to.

I suggest 40tude Dialog, bur I believe even Mickeysoft's Outhouse Excess
wil allow you to scan messages in thread order, perhaps even jumping to
highlighted new replies, if you set it up properly  -  but don't hold me to
it, as I don't intend to install that crap on my computer just to find out.

OK, for some reason I didn't even get the first message, just your
reply to it which now makes sense.   Maybe I have some sort of filter
to screen out morons, but I still get to see my messages :-)

Doubtful--filters don't come pre-installed; you have to set them up
yourself.

The message probably just didn't make it to your ISP's news server, a
not uncommon occurrence.

Not just you. I did not receive the original message either. I'm
using Thunderbird, but I think the original message may have been
withdrawn or something before we downloaded it.

It doesn't matter what news client you use.

It depends on what messages your ISP's news server carries. They're all
different, you know. NNTP is a chaotic, largely unsynchronized protocol.

Silly Billy spammer doesn't realise that his website is suspended, and it is
also blocked as a phishing site.

There are LOTS of persons in this world who cannot be civil.
I've met more than my share of them over the years. Seems anytime
you introduce facts that don't fit in with their pre-conceived
notion of how things should be, they go into the attack mode.
Just part of life, I guess.       -    Mark Edward Marchiafava

Yep:

This account has been suspended for either a violation in
Liquid Web Inc.'s  terms of service or an issue with payment.

So we don't know whether its a payment issue or a TOS violation or what.

So what's with the recent upsurge in spam, here and every other
newsgroup I read?

And it's not coming from Google's SpamPortal (tm)(R), either. This
particular spammer uses something called Usenet Monster Unlimited.

I see alot of the spam crap on another newsgroup I'm on, but seldom on
this one and both routed by Google.

I just don't understand

Possible hacked news feed or may be a rogue newsfeed.

And the answer is a hacked news server.

I wanted to apologize for the recent spam floods for the consumer
product crap.

readnews does mostly wholesale for other Usenet providers.  At the
start the spammer had found that our signup link was still active
for readnews individual accounts and was injecting via readnews
individual accounts.

For the last 2 days the spammers have been mostly targeting
usenetmonster.com and some of our resellers.

We already have some rate-limiting in place so that if a user
posts > 100 messages in a day, posting will be disabled the next
time they log in.  Right now the software doesn't actually cut
the NNTP connection based on the number of posts, so we are
looking at doing that as well so that the posting restriction
will take effect on that side.

Our architecture has a couple of posting boxes - but right now
those see the article after the posting user information has
been encrypted into the X-Trace: header.

We're also doing some work today to add decryption to the post
filtering on the posting boxes so we can do filtering on a user
basis (tracking reseller users + our own) as well.

And of course in the mean time we're manually deleting accounts
at the rate of about one/hour.

We hope to have the problem under control (or at least chased to
another Usenet provider) by later today.

Sorry for the floods that have been getting out; this has been
a bit more aggressive and shifting than we've seen in the past.
