Modular G scale railroading

I was wondering if anyone out there has any information on modular
model railroading in G 'scale'.

I've seen standards for things like NTRAK modules, is there a similar
standard for the larger ~1/24th scales?

I would like to think I am not too unusual.  I used to build a 5x9
Lionel or HO layout ontop of a ping pong table in the winter.  Now
that I am older and have two children of my own; I have gotten back
into the railroading.  I've been collecting LGB engines and rolling
stock, and while I dream of building a garden railroad.  However, like
most people the prospect of building a massive 20x100 railroad
outdoors in northeastern ohio is somewhat difficult with four months
or more of winter (although negociating space from the spouse may be
easier than those of you who work in the basement).

Some of the LGB trains get pulled out after Thanksgiving and spend
most of the winter setup all over the living room floor.  I would like
to build some modules with some sidings and a mulitple module with a
small yard which could be bridged together.

The question I have before I begin is, is there a standard for this?

I would think with the popularity of LGB, and the large physical size,
modular railroading would be quie popular.

I don't know of any standards for G gauge. Unless you plan to use your
modules with someone else, make your own standards. I made my HO RR modular
just in case I move and want to take it with me. It fits my standards but no
one else's.

No, but you could study the module standards recommended by NMRA, which are
based on Ntrak's standards (nmra.org). Or go to Ntrak's website (google it),
and check it out.

Just keep in mind that a module must be small enough to go through a door and
fit in a vehicle, and light enough for one person to carry. Mechanical and
electrical connections are not scale/gauge dependent. Back drops must be
dismountable, legs should be foldable, etc.

Have fun! And when you come up with what you think is a viable design, post
here and give us website where we can see it.

You might inquire about this with the Bay Area Garden Railway Society
(web-site at http://www.bagrs.org).  They have a modular layout that
they display for the public at various locations and events.  Since
the layout's modules were built by many different people they must
have had some common standards...  It's a fairly large layout with
a lot of varied modules.

Go to www.largescale.com and talk with Jon the owner. There are standards
already set for Large Scale (G) modules. They've been in use for years...
