I don't recall seeing the items mentioned while I was growing up. But, I
just recently saw some of the old west items on ebay. Within the last
week. They were listed with some other Athearn items. A"package" deal.
Not sure whether it was "O" or HO though.

These are described in Chapter XII of "Greenberg's Guide to Athearn trains"
by Dallas Mallerich. Athearn initially produced 5 1:48 circus wagons
(calliope, band, tableau, lion cage, bear den) "within a few years of his
acquisition [in 1951] of Globe Models and sold under the Globe Big Top
label." (These kits were still available a few years ago from Betty
Schmid/Circusiana at $3.95 each - I have one of each for my circus train.)
In the early 1960's Mallerich states that Athearn introduced a stage coach
kit and a medicine wagon kit. He notes that the box for the medicine wagon
kit illustrated kits for an Honest John missile and launcher, a Hawk missile
battery, a Marine LVT, a missile transporter, a Thor missile, a La Coquette
balloon, the NS Savannah, and a Ben Hur chariot. An old Athearn employee
told Mallerich that Athearn never produced these other kits. Mallerich
notes that the illustrations appear to be the same a kits offered by Revell.
Mallerich does not know what became of the stage coach and medicine wagon
dies. Gary Q

Re-boxed Revell kits. 1/48. I have the Stagecoach. They even have the
Revell instructions with "Athearn" on it instead of "Revell". And these
are rather rare. I found another stagecoach at a show that the guy
wanted $175 for.

Recognize the Greenburg name but *assume* it deals more with
collectibles than currently available models. But just in
case.......
Would Greenberg's list other Miscellaneous 1.48 vehicles used as
scenery for layouts, say pre-1950? There are some current 1.48
modelss that can be quite pricey -- don't want to put big bucks
into accessories.

Guidebooks generally deal with items no longer in production, and the
Greenberg guides are limited to model railroad and toy train items with
occasional brief mention of associated non-RR items from those same
manufacturers. It sounds like you want a current catalog rather than a
collectors guide. Does the Walthers O or large scale catalog list vehicles?
Have you searched in Google for 1:48 (and 1:45 and 1:43) vehicle dealers?

The military kits you describe were issued by a company called 'ADAMS',
not Athearn. The dies are still 'on the loose', and some kits are
intermittently available today under other names. Some were once branded
'Life-Like'. All were in 1/40 scale. They were excellent kits for their
time frame, and not too bad even by today's standard, except for the odd
1/40 scale (military modelers model in mostly 1/35 scale).
Whether there was any connection between Adams and Athearn I have NO idea.

Thanks all who shared some nfo on these kits. All very interesting. The
reason I asked was I purchased one of the old west "Wells Fargo Mail &
Stage Coach" Kit# K-230:49 in 1/48 Scale. This is more or less brand new
old hobby store stock. Contents are still sealed in clear bag in the
Box. Instructions dated for 1962. On the box sides it shows other
models available. In the other west model series was Kit# K-231 Covered
Wagon and Kit# K-232 Ranch Wagon. On the other side flap it shows the
military models. They are: Kit # K150, Honest John and Launcher, Kit #
K151 Self Propelled Gun, Kit # K152 105mm Gun with Emplacment, Kit #
K153 Atomic Cannon and Transports and Kit # K154 Hawk Missle Battery.
Scales not listed.
I have tried to check the eBay auctions but couldn't find any that
was mentioned here. Oh well, I just found this interesting as I didn't
know Athearn was in anything other than their HO Train Lines and their
earlier O Scale Freight Car Kits.....Thanks again...Gary
