I just uploaded some data on igniters. It's in the "Research" area of the
rocketmaterials website. Any comments? Should I continue the project?

A few things come to mind.

How long does it take the thermocouple to react?

How hot for how long do things have to be to ignite a motor?

Does the composition of the sparks given off by the ignitor affect the
ability to ignite the motor?

The splash patterm / area of the flame / sparks will probably affect
this.  Is there a way to quantify this?

This seems like a worthwhile project.  Maybe a measurement of how
quickley each ignitor actually lights the same motors is a good way to
measure it.  I'm thinking a an input to show when voltage was applied
in conjunction with pressue readings and output from a load cell would
be good.

Excellent questions! (I'd expect nothing less.)

I'll keep playing and see if I can quantify some of them.

I'm slowly putting together a test stand that would be good.  Have any
Al scrap floating around up there?  I have a load cell & pressure
xducer.

This cut on my finger is sure messing up my typing.

The only Al scrap I have is 105mm boat tails for the M915.
Here's a picture: http://www.cmcscr.org/m915.htm

It would have to be demilled so I would have to drill a hole in the middle,
Something like a 38mm or 54mm hole would work. :-)

If it's one of those nasty paper cuts, try a drop of CA to fix it.

David at Quickburst enjoyed the review. I would imagine he might provide
with you with some test product for further info.
He provides on-site sales at Texas launches and I have never seen a
Quickburst fail to light a reload no matter who makes it.

I'll add that everyone I've used worked.

One of the reasons for the thin amount of data points is cost. It can get
expensive just burning igniters for fun. I will be testing another Magnalite
this afternoon but with an ultra thin thermocouple. This will show if the
thickness of the thermocouple is effecting the test results.

He is welcome to send any samples he wishes. I'll test them all using any
method he wishes.

Any other igniter makers out there want to participate?

I will forward the info to him. I was at a launch with him today and he told
him about it. He enjoyed the data.

I would too! At this point, it looks like he has the hotest igniters.
