Porta-potties at BALLS

Why don't the organizers at BALLS get more porta-potties or have them
emptied over the weekend?  I have a toilet in my RV, but I heard reports
on Sunday that they were pretty full again this year.

I may go one of these years without my RV and I would like to have a
bathroom that isn't full to the rim.

I would be willing to pay a bit more if that is what it takes to have
decent facilities.  I do commend AHPRA for having two more porta-potties
than last year and also for having hand washing facilities this year.

At LDRS23 they ran out of TP in the porta potties.  We put some issues

That would be practical if they are delivered by a service but possibly
not if hauled  by users from far away. Anybody know?

Last year they were hauled in on a trailer that had steps up to the porta
potties.  This year they were placed on the ground, so I assume a service
brought them in.

I believe that the club members themselves haul them out to the site and back
again after the launch.  Not a job that I'd want to do, especially after they
are full.
The launch organizers have my respect.

Do you like to use a toilet that is almost overflowing?  I don't care
about the smell as long as they aren't full and are usable.

Is it really too much to ask for a launch organizer to have adequate
toilet facilties for the crowd?

This was a Tripoli launch, right?

Just a launch organizer asking who never heard that complaint at his
launches.

Or maybe Jerry's friends just sh.t less?

I'm thinking Jerry's imaginary friends only need imaginary potra
potties.

or

Since they're full of sh.t, they must not be using the porta potties.

Nope, not even a single blade of grass -- and it's a heck of a long walk from
the center of the dry lake, out to the edges where there is some sparse growth.

The 'facilities' at GHS should be adequate.  Perhaps we can position one
porta-potty at a somewhat greater distance from the flight line, for those
who have too much of Jim's cooking. :-o

No doubt about it, my cuisine ain't for the faint of heart. And I'll
vouch for the great job the SSS crew does at running the GHS launch,
plenty of nice new porta-potties emptied daily and a dumpster for

I can tell you guys from "first hand" (get it....) experience that
AHPRA does a great job, especially with the toilets! They did the ARG
weekend launch this year and it was great! My wife was even "thrilled"
that the toilets had a clean smell, toilet paper and hand sanitizer.
If you can make a woman happy with a porta potty, you have your "crap"
together! I know I know, too many bad puns but it is Friday afterall.

Jim,

Just tell everybodythat the ARG launch was a "trailer trash" theme.
With porta potties in the back ground who would argue. The one picture
I really would have loved to have, one with the faces of the Arizona
State University group (that built that large rocket that fell apart
in mid-air) with a porta potty in the backgound, that would have been
classic!

Steve,

That was a great launch no doubt, that john out there was reminiscent
of the "park".

And what is it with these engineering students? I've seen a couple of
teams fly the past few years, neither successfully. It seemed to me
they were reinventing the wheel.

If you got nothing going on later today stop by the shop, we'll be
working on the trailer and I'm working on a new variation of the
Atomic Buffalo Turd. Think Quesa Asadero, scallion and garlic, or
maybe some Gorgonzola and shallot....you ought to smell my kitchen
right now...

Jim,

The engineering students that I have seen are so darn cocky. A large
percentage don't want to listen to people "in the field". I have 10
years design experience, but I still love talking to people to get
ideas / pointers. It seems that the recent teams "know it all", it's a
shame really. The best advice I ever got has always come from people,
not books!

Thanks for the offer, but I was in Laughlin all day Saturday. Did one
of those turn around trips with some friends and family. I will
probably see you for the XRAA launch in August, the weather has been
alot friendlier lately!!

Why do you (and Dave and Fred and ...) have to make every thing about Jerry.
You just make him look better than you.

Brian,

It is chicken sh.t on your part to post hearsay complaints on this forum
about launches.  You've been doing it for years and it's getting to the
point where folks would like to see you just stay home, or at the very
least, SHUT UP.

Do you think you're doing a public service or what?

I'm guessing that pumping and cleaning service in the desert ain't cheap and
maybe not even available.

Maybe you'd like to be in charge of all the big launches so they can be run
to your satisfaction.

It might be a significant fraction of the total rental cost. But as a
practical matter it might be worth it IF AVAILABLE.

BTW I agree about Brian.

Or at least put him in charge of the toilets. Job title "pooper scooper" or
more like "sh.t disturber"

I seem to remember some whiney comments about LDRS 23 from his
direction. Or, I may be thinking of someone else..

Funny how everyone is willing to pay a few extra bucks AFTER the fact;
running a launch is serious business for any club that undertakes it.
Unfortunately, rocketeers, as a group, are some of the cheapest people on
the planet. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing. My point is simply
that in estimating resources these days I can understand a club
UNDERestimating resources in order to keep costs down.

In the case of porta-potties, especially over a weekend, it is difficult in
some markets to simply call up and have a truck come by to service one (or
more) of them. One must book in advance.... or call and wait for service.
By which time the launch is over.

The best solution is to have more resources than you expect to need,
especially when it comes to porta-potties.

But then everyone complains about the extra $5 in flyer fees.

Jeez, caught between a rock and a hard place. (Get it?)
