You are correct. A number of trollers are simply out to get responses,
and they accumulate a score for each response. The score doesn't mean
much except to other trolls.
One way of telling this behavior is to look for crossposts. The trolls
will crosspost to several groups, one of which is their scoring group.
Every response is a point or something.
So if you can't help but respond to an obviously moronic troll, at
least break the chain and cancel the crossposts.

The score means a LOT to other trolls. It means that there are enough
gullible idiots on the newsgroup that it is worth posting more spam.
