raydunakin@aol.com - 13 Nov 2005 07:16 GMT > In the last few times I have read this news group I have noticed a lot of > off topic junk when I was hoping to find something informative and usefull. This is pretty tame compared to a lot of other usenet groups. As for your search for something informative and useful, what exactly are you looking for? Post a rocketry question and you'll get plenty of informative and useful answers here.

Greg Heilers - 13 Nov 2005 08:22 GMT >> In the last few times I have read this news group I have noticed a lot of >> off topic junk when I was hoping to find something informative and [quoted text clipped - 6 lines] > > , People should also remember, that rocketeers are no different for other model builders. When we get together...be it at a monthly club meeting, a contest, or here in cyber-space...that we talk about a *lot* of off-topic things. Modelers, in general, are of above-average intelligence; and are also well-informed in current events, politics, history, etc. We talk about such things with each other, because we *can*. Compare that with our typical day at work; where one's coworkers are not capable of engaging in such types of conversations.
We also are very talented at sharing humor of the most ribald and politically incorrect nature (the best kind of humor, by far...)!
You are also correct in suggesting that one needs to *ask* for information; as opposed to just waiting for it to fall into their laps. Modelers are very willing to "share the knowledge"; but we do *not* usually support the "hobby welfare state"...catering to people just waiting for a handout.

One just needs to look at the subject line and see if one is interested. If not, then go on to something else. I found the subject line of the book ripoff tedious and I just went on to something else. Kurt Savegnago

I use a 1971 Sansui. Excellent frequency response. Power transistors get pretty hot though, so a soon as I "smell amp" the big cooling blower gets fired up...
Fried two sets of speakers, and thus far the only ones holding steady are a pair of CV V253 MKII's...
Got the pair for $100 bucks at a garage sale...

Aluminum foil hats have been shown, in quadruple blind clinical studies, to enhance the etheral ultrasubmegamassivebass response that *is* present, but typically unnoticed when utilizing standard "humanoid" speakers. Prior to this discovery, only the inhabitants of Oxydol-9 were able to even *begin* to perceive these multicellular, sub-atomic, electrohydrodynamic vibrations.
Certain species of Yeti *and* Sub Genii, are rumoured to be at least cognizant of the existance of these special electonuclearcarburated vibrations...

randyolb@charter.net - 21 Nov 2005 23:27 GMT The best speakers for the home I ever knew of were from Radio Shack called Nova 8. They can handle 250 watts per channel turned wide open. NO distortion. One time I broke out a window in my bedroom playing Hair of the Dog all the way up. After that I learned to open the window but then the airport called and complained.
They were guaranteed for life but they stopped selling them back about 1980. I still have mine 31 years later and they still sound good.

Who cares about a silly cage, anyway? Or a CD player that costs more than 99 bucks, for that matter. Cages and CD players exist only to transport and entertain me between home and the track or flying field.

Yep. Somebody *gave* me the Sansui. Had it in their garage or something. Best damn amplifier I've ever owned (toasted our Yamaha years ago)...
Speakers (well, the bass side at least) came from a garage sale where the jilted woman of an ex-DJ was unloading his stuff just to try and forget him, I guess... I don't think you can find those drivers for less than $500 now...
Turn on the blower, wind up the volume, unlatch the 20db filter, start Dark Side of the Moon, and watch the plaster dust fall from the ceiling fixtures, and the pictures on the wall start moving around by themselves...

Dunno what it is, but that "middle eastern" syncopation is just awesome...
And at ear bleeding intensities, it's unbeatable!

My wife bought me a Bose Wave Radio - what an overpriced piece of crap!! This is NOT for ROCKIN!

So two things. Ok, true story here. A buddy of mine that I worked with for years asked me to give him a ride from the airport to home. I've never seen his house before so he gave a quick tour. Nothing much, big a.s tv, nice kitchen, *real* nice workshop and then his hifi system....oh my god...
I sat in the sweet spot and he cranked up some Tori Amos....I swear the the piano was right there in the living room! God as my witness I could smell Tori's perfume!
Then he shows me this box filled with handwritten notes and algorithms from the last ten years he spent building this system. We're talking hand made tube amps, preamps, speaker boxes(several hundred lbs a piece) x-overs et all. The cable he used for the speakers is about 1" round! He even installed a cooling system in the basement that goes through the floor to his living room. All in all he gave me a estimate on what's invested in it and well, I think it literally doubled his house in value as when the house goes, so does the hifi.
Now the kicker....my bud is 80% deaf!
Go figure...

And don't you want to call me a "poo poo head" or somesuch?

Hilty > Hilty Information Systems Tod; now your talking about the good old stuff. I have an old Sansui 5000C, bought in late 1968, pushing a pair of old Utah 15 inch musical instrument speakers and a pair of Bogan horns, all set up in my garage. I replaced the Sansui in the house with a Carver setup many years ago. However, the Carver fails to do justice to Black Sabbath like the Sansui set up. At half volume, the ripples on top a glass of beer, need to be seen to be appreciated..(:-)
