Planet News - 12 Jan 2007 23:26 GMT WORLD WIDE WEB — In an widely-distributed email announcement, Snap.com today announced The SPA 100: A Selection Of 100 Sites Using Snap Preview Anywhere. Of the 100 sites Snap.com listed as their picks to honor a few of the most interesting Snap Preview Anywhere sites, Snap.com included 10 sites in the announcement. Rocketry Planet had the privilege of being listed fifth.
Since being released just two months ago, Snap.com has been integrated into 30,000 websites worldwide and has generated over 70 million site previews. Because of the overwhelming response to the Snap Preview technology, WordPress has agreed to add Snap Preview Anywhere to over 600,000 websites.
Snap Preview Anywhere has enabled Rocketry Planet users to preview the nearly 700 Web links to hobby rocketry-related Web sites from our database as well as has allowed users to preview Web sites mentioned in the various news articles, press releases, product reviews and other pieces of dynamic content that we publish. Without Snap Preview, users basically were flipping a coin as to whether or not they wanted to follow external links through to their destination. Now, they can make that decision before leaving our site. As a result, we have created via Snap Preview a richer user experience and increased the stickiness of our site at the same time.
Snap.com's announcement email:
Title: We are truly humbled From: Snap Preview Anywhere [ spacustomerservice@snap.com] Date: Friday, January 12, 2007 3:08PM Dear Website Owner, About two months ago, we launched Snap Preview Anywhere because a number of websites had asked if they could use our website previews on their sites. Little did we know that it would explode. In just 8 weeks, over 30,000 sites worldwide have already invited us to be part of their sites. We've generated over 70,000,000 previews. And we've helped millions of your users get more from your site. Now, thanks to your acceptance of Snap Preview Anywhere, WordPress, the company that powers so much of the blogosphere, has agreed to put us on 600,000 blogs! Read all about it. Thank you--this would not have happened without you! So, allow us to honor a few of the most interesting Snap Preview Anywhere Sites. One of the great benefits for Snap.com has been all of the incredible sites we've gotten to know. We've compiled a list of 100 great Snap Preview Anywhere Sites on our blog (and there are thousands we wish we could have included), but here are 10 just to get you started: We Make Money Not Art Trendhunter Thursday Thirteen Thomas Hawk Rocketry Planet PuppetVision Level42 Bob Stumpel Hurricane Katrina.org Good Wine Under $20. See the other 90 sites and keep a look out for more listings of great Snap Preview Anywhere sites. Warmest Regards, Team Snap

Seriously, some of you people should see a professional > about your anger issues. I've always preferred 'opt-in' on features. I'm on a limited connection (satellite) and every byte counts. Bells and whistles like snap, flash, streaming ads and the like are wasteful of bytes and bandwidth, and I don't have time to go looking for the "how to disable" instructions for every piece of useless (to me) scripting. Easier to use a good filter like AdBlock and make it go away from every site I visit.
I did take the time to look at their 'disable' system, and it won't work for everyone, anyway. It relies on cookies, and I have almost all cookies blocked on my machine. Additionally, the cookies are wiped every session- which cancels snap.com's "cancel". Useless for anyone that is serious about computer security.
Anger? Nah, I just calls 'em as I sees 'em. If that offends you somehow, gee, sorry.

That way you don't have to play games with cookies, and the action is totally blocked. I use iCab on the Mac a lot, and only turn on scripting for a few trusted sites that I know require it for specific functions.

30,000 websites installed 70,000,000 previews generated 2 cry babies
70 million uses vs. 2 cry babies

Right after you make a feeble attempt at statistics.
I can assure you that I'm bright enough to make up my own mind on what I like and don't like. And if I don't like something I will not use it. I'm also bright enough to come up with my own putdown. You apparently are not bright enough to know when you've been put down.

Apparently they must have been reformed because I don't hear the Film Actors Guild talking about how stupid the majority of voters are this time around.

2) As far as TRF is concerned, they have many different sub-topic forums and one of them is for general rambling like the message quoted. The only thing I got from the message posted here is that the poster cannot comprehend the simple use of sub-topic forums. How sad.

Calrocket - 16 Jan 2007 03:12 GMT Actually, I wasn't complaining, just letting you know that not everyone is a fan of this technology. I would like to add a few other comments. Being partially visually impaired, I follow the lines of text with the mouse pointer, and depending on the page position, the pop up box blocks out the text. Attempting to be funny was a very bad idea. RP has used this technology in a very responsible manner, and as another poster has stated, it can be very useful. Other site have links attached to every fifth word or so, and pop up ads to unrelated items.

Other site have links > attached to every fifth word or so, and pop up ads to unrelated items. I appreciate your comments, especially the fact that you feel we have used the technology responsibly. Access for users with disabilities is a real issue and one often overlooked on the web. We have tried to make the preview technology available only in areas of relevance: the catalog of web links and website addresses within the articles. I have seen sites use it and similar technologies with links on everything, and in combination with other content technologies, like the ones that hyperlink keywords which then hijacked you to advertising. We do not hyperlink anything unless it is very relevant, and then only link it to Snap Preview if a preview would be relevant. Out intention was to enhance your user experience, not detract from it. As our hyperlinks are a readily visible color, most users should find navigating around them not difficult. But there are options, something for everyone.
