Will probably have 30 cub scouts participating in May (here in the Houston
area)
1st Grade up through 4th.

1st-3rd Graders will be building E2X Firehawks

4th Graders (Webelos) will be building skill level 1 Alphas.

Question #1 - What type of competitions can the boys have?

Here's what I have so far:
- Best Looking Rocket (and worst)
- Highest Altitude by model (looking for easy/best way to judge altitude)
- Longest flight
- Any other ideas?

Question #2 - Are there any resources out there for running a model rocket
derby?

Thanks!  -Andy

Some of the standard fare includes-

- duration (longest in the air)
- closest to a set flight time (not too long or too short)
- closest to pad
- closest to downrange target (not too far, no land sharks please)
- drag race - multi-rocket launch (first off the pad, to apogee, or to
landing)

Having done a few PineWoods, we found it works well if there's lots of
awards to be given for various design or finish aspects.

Sounds like you're not doing a build-it design class, so a lot of the
PineWood style awards aren't applicable for a single rocket design. You
still could do-

- lightest safe weight (Range Safety Officer inspects for required minimum
strength) - most colorful
- shiniest finish
- best name

Yes, a lot of these are subjective. When doing the pinewood derby we found
something as simple as a laminated certificate stating "Smoothest Finish"
took some of the sting out of an early elimination from a speed trial.

We're doing a Cub-Scout Rocket Derby out here in Mass in April with
the Lone Tree District.  So far we have 432 Cub Scouts building the
FlisKits Thing-a-ma-Jig (super easy balsa Skill Level 1 kit).

We will be doing the following contests:
- Best looking
- Longest flight (first motion to landing)
- Spot landing (we'll have a large circle out in the field

We selected timing events as it is easier to do...

We are also including the Boy Scouts.  We have 33 troops and each
troop will be building a PayLord payloader and carrying an egg.  They
will be judged on time as well as construction and appearance.  The
Boy Scouts will also be intrumental in helping run the Cub Scout
portion of the days activities. Gonna be a busy day :)

FlisKits provided the Scouts with a complete event including kits,
motors, wadding, launch field, launch equipment and a crew to run it.
The "field" includes port-a-potties, law enforecment and parking as
well.  Lanuch crew and equipment is provided by CMASS (great bunch of
guys! :) )

You will have a great time with your kids out there.  Good luck and be
sure to keep us posted on how it goes.

That's Estes' guide to contests

I've read it, its an awesome guide with how to, and what to perform
contests.

Andy,
Please don't do a "worst looking" contest.

I agree with Tom, keeping things positive at their age is a good thing.
