Does anyone know where it's o.k. to launch model rockets around the Denver
area? I'm planning a visit there and my sis-in-law said rockets were banned
there. I couldn't believe it, so I called up the Denver Fire Dept. They
said, "All fireworks are illegal". I asked if there was anyway I could get
permit to launch my model rocket, (we're talking nothing larger than a C6-5
engine), and they said, "No". They also said they didn't know about the
surrounding counties. I was hoping to do some launching with some of my
younger relatives. I haven't launched since the 70's. These Nazi
regulations were not in effect 30+ years ago when I was a kid living in
Denver (and launching lots of Estes rockets). For that matter, I don't like
the idea of model rocketry being categorized as "fireworks". It's a
different mentality than some schmo with his beer and barbeque on the 4th of
July. I never had nor caused any fires with my rockets. Any advice would
be appreciated.
Thanks, Robert

Go to www.nar.org and find a local club. They will have
infrastructure to support your flying.

Probably not much time to do the research, but you might want to check your
state regulations. In Ohio, the statue for fireworks specifically exempts
model rockets from being classed as fireworks. It might be an error in how
the local county is interpreting the law.

Estes has an extensive database of state regulations. I don't know if they know details of
local city regulations, but they are pretty darned close to you. Call them. Ask for Mary
Roberts. 1-800-525-7561.

That was an excellent idea Fred. I contacted Estes and had a nice chat with
Mary Roberts. She E-mailed me some .docs about Colorado state firework
laws. Model rockets (under 2 ounces of propellant) are exempted in firework
legislation. The Denver Fire Dept. doesn't know what they are talking
about. Thanks, Robert
