Does anyone have a schematic for a staging time that does NOT use a pic or
BASIC STAMP?  I have some friends that would like to build a down-scaled
model of a sounding rocket and just can't afford the $90 or co of
commercial timer.

You can get a timer for half that.  The PerfectFlite MT3G (with G
switch) has a $43 price.  I've used mine to successfully airstart
outboards.  You would be hard-pressed to roll your own for that
price.  And it has a special safety feature requiring the G level to
be maintained for half a second to prevent accidental firing.  That
would be difficult to implement without a micro.
