Does anyone know what's going on at Estes?  Years ago I used to order
kits, parts, and motors through the mail from their catalog.  Now
though, they tell me that they don't issue a catalog anymore and their
website seems to be broken.  I still see kits in the stores but I
prefer to pick from the entire selection of what they offer rather
than just what they stock in the local stores.  If Estes is not
selling directly to the public anymore, is there anyone out there on
the internet selling the full line of products?

It appears that they are still in the process of redesigning their website.

I clicked on a couple of links, and the bottom of the screen had their 800
number to call for ordering.

Example:  We are currently redesigning our spare parts purchasing section,
as well as adding additional spare parts for our customers. Please call 1-
866-532-6962 to place an order. Thank-you.

Hopefully, they're not going anywhere...

The site is not really "borken', it just does not work if you are not
using the very latest version of Microsoft Internet Explorer. It will
not work for older versions.

Best bets for online sales of Estes are hobbylinc.com and ehobbies.com

or you can advance to Quest and Aerotech and the many other companies.
There are a bunch of links to these companies on this website:

All part of the shrinkage...

When I was a kid, I had fond memories of taking the Estes facility tour up
in Penrose.    Back in 2000, I stopped by and they said they no longer
conduct tours.  But they still had some nice models in the display cases in
the front office.

Let's face it, designing and making good quality kits, with good easy to
understand directions, is more expensive than using cheap Chineese labor to
produce ready made, or nearly ready to fly rockets.  Add to that the fact
that most kids are no longer DIY types, but couch & video game types, it's
not hard to see the writing on the wall.

OTOH, the prices for old Estes catalogs on ebay may rise!  Buy them up now.

In case most of the 4 people left on USENET were not aware of the
extensive discussion on the web based forums by thousands of active
rocket folks: Estes is moving a lot of their kit production from China
to the USA. There are many reasons for this, but the products listed
on their website for later in 2009 are pretty damned cool looking with
modern construction techniques (balsa wood fins and through the wall
fin attachment, etc.). Heck, they even have re-created models that
ORIGINALLY had plastic fin units, but the new version will have balsa
fins!

Since you cannot navigate the Estes website with older versions of IE,
here are some direct links:

I just stumbled across an interesting, and most likely related,
statement on Estes' site:

"Due to the enactment of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act
(CPSIA) on August 14, 2008 Estes - Cox Corporation may not be able to
provide replacement parts for products imported prior to August 14,
2008 and that have been discontinued. Whenever possible however, Estes
- Cox will attempt to substitute a similar product.

To find more information about this new law and CPSC regulations visit
www.cpsc.gov and search for CPSIA. FAQ's, guides and memorandoms
concerning the law are also posted there."

(And, yes - I'm just crawling out from my cave after several years of
hibernation so, if this is well known, forgive me for repeating it.)
