aeonaero@gmail.com - 02 Apr 2009 21:30 GMT Ok folks. I'm not a great one to speak here, but RMR seems dead! I haven't been around for quite a long time! Infact, I think it's been at least 5 years. I've been itching to start building again, and of course I come back to my old stomping grounds... RMR.
What do I find? A desert wasteland. Virtual tumbleweeds blowing across a digital plane of nothing. This is sad. It wasn't that long ago that I would post 20-30 times a day along with all the other nuts. If any of you guys from the late 90s to early 00s are still around, pop in and say hi!
It's sad really. This group was really hoppin back then, Hundreds of posts, lots of laughs, a few flames, a couple trolls, but it was still fun. Anyone remember those heady days???
Oh well. I'll check back later to hear the crickets song.
See you all at the field someday again (hopefully!)

Joe Pfeiffer - 02 Apr 2009 22:03 GMT Some of us are still around... but there were some really unfortunate events over the last few years that drove most people away.
aeonaero@gmail.com - 02 Apr 2009 22:53 GMT > Some of us are still around... but there were some really unfortunate > events over the last few years that drove most people away. Looks like it. A quick tromp through google groups shows a stint of spam that could choke a 6 M cluster!
If it could silence good old Bob Kaplow, and Tod Hilty, then it must have been bad!

Dan Major - 03 Apr 2009 20:56 GMT Some of us are still around, just lurking and checking on the list from time to time. The spam flood ran a bunch of people off . I'm just waiting until the weather is a little bit better and we can go out launching. I just picked up a new digital camcorder at Radio Shack. It is on sale for $50. It's small enough to fit inside a BT60 body tube. I may have to build a "stretched" Fat Boy to lift it.

I'm going to have to look at that on my way home (a few years ago, I bought a tiny digital still camera with the idea of putting it in a model rocket, but never pursued the project. This sounds even better). Thanks!

I'd love to have the kahunas to do it with my camera, but alas, I don't. There's something about launching almost $4k worth of camera/ lens in a rocket that makes me slightly ill. Especially remembering some of my more glorious prangs, lawndarts, and all sorts of various evil deeds I've done to them over the years. Yes I'd get some truly glorious 1080P footage, but my cardiologist would have me executed if he knew what I was planning to do yo my stress levels. :)

Do you remember what the camera make/model were? I went by RS as planned, but the only video camera on sale in that price range was about 2 1/4" wide -- quite a bit larger than a BT-60. That was the smallest one I saw, too...

I don't have the plastic "clamshell" it came in, or any instructions with me here at home. I may have left it at work (if they haven't taken out the trash). It's made by Digital Concepts. I may have the body tube number wrong. It's smaller than a CVS digital camcorder, which will fit into the body tube used in a Fat Boy - BT80?? It's 2 1/4" wide by 4 1/4" tall and 3/4 - 7/8" thick. If I can find the paper work or the box it came in, I'll post more info. If the weather ever settles down, I'll launch it. The way the last couple of launches went for me though, I'll get great shots from on top of a CATO. If the weather keeps up I may try sending it up a kite.

If the weather keeps up I may try sending it up a kite. Ah, OK -- that does sound like the one I saw. You had my hopes up! (BT-60 is about 1.5").

You had my hopes up! > (BT-60 is about 1.5"). The AipTek(sp?) stuff will fit in a BT50. I have an "AipTek Trio Pencam" that will fit inside one. The resolution and slow frame rate make it almost useless for rocketry video. If hacked to take a series if stills, it will work OK. The CVS "disposable" digital camera is another choice to hack for still photos.
The camcorder package says "QuickFix Digital Camcorder". And on the bottom by the bar code, it says "Item # 38693".

1) Google Groups, which thinks it "owns" usenet, but at the same time refuses to police the spammers that use its portal to spam newsgroups across all topics. Alas, I'm stuck here because my other news sources all dried up, my last one just over a year ago.
2) The IDIOTS and a.sholes right here that keep responding to the spammers, trolls, crackpots, et al. Yes, I'm talking about EVERY PERSON who has responded to that other idiots thread that's running right now in RMR. Each one of them is a bigger plague on RMR than Jerry Irvine.
The solution to this problem is two simple words:

But, having recently met a co-worker who is into rocketry, and having attended the recent Michigan Team 1 high power launch with him, I've got the bug again. Like you, I thought I'd stop by the old stomping grounds.
I just got here - haven't had a chance to look around to see the spam level - this is the first thread to catch my eye. To the folks who have been occasionally monitoring this group: in your opinion, is there any hope that RMR will be resurrected and become a fun, useful place again?

Sure -- there have been a couple of good threads that have popped up in recent weeks; it can come back.

Bots have become more sophisticated (whilst I haven't!) and spam is unfortunately here to stay for the foreseeable future. Especially to a completely open thing like newsgroups is prime fodder for the spammers. Many groups that were once flourishing have moved to private, or at least controlled forum systems because of it. I think that at some point, NNTP may go the way of Gopher and Wais. It's like Stephen King writes in the Gunslinger.. "the world has moved on".
I used to be very active in RMR and several other groups/forums. Now the only forum I participate is a comply private one for my photography business. Nobody who doesn't pay and belong to the organisation can access it and there is no spam whatsoever.
I'm sure the entity that once was RMR is alive in various part around the interweb in various forums. I to have been contemplating a return to the hobby, and of course my first stop was here.
Maybe it will take something as stupid as everyone prefacing their post titles with "NS:" (NotSpam) and filtering out anything that doesn't have it. It would be effective until the bots caught on. (A year? 6months? 2 weeks?) I don't have the answer, but hope that a fun RMR may yet again come to be.
