I always used to use doped nylon covering because I considered Solartex
expensive in comparison.
I once did a proper eveluation and discovered that the cost of nylon plus
dope plus paint plus fuel proofer worked out to be at least as costly as
Solartex and in some cases could be more expensive. It is also more time
consuming to apply - especially waiting for the dope etc. to dry and if you
consider the time element as a cost, IMO, Solartex becomes the cheaper
option. It is also easier to control/correct any warping tendency on open
wing structures for example.

Since then I have used Solartex exclusively.

Hi Chris,
Iam using a heat shrink covering called "Angel Wings".It is cloudy
opaque white until heated when it turns absolutely clear.
Very strong ( I think stronger than Solarfilm) comes in very large
sheets (the lot I got was not in rolls) just a folded sheet and I
ordered 9 metres which cost Aust.$23.00.Because it came in a sheet I
don't know now just how much I received, but it was a hellova
lot.Biggest drawback is it is clear but the instructions recommended
using polycarbonate paint on the finished side.
Tried that but it still peels off with use.I now cover my plane
framework with kite material which we buy here remarkably cheaply and
it shrinks with water and thencover the plane with Angel Wings to stop
it being see thru.Works well and is really cheap.Iam into electric so I
can't comment on the effects of fuel, but I imagine the clear finish
would be quite ok with glow fuel.
Now the problem my friends in the local flying club are having is
contacting the supplier I purchased from.He came from Tasmania
(devonport) and his web site was "Angelwings",however no one here can
contact him on that web site, plenty of Angel Wings sites tho and they
handle modelling gear so it could be worth you giving it a go.
Incidentally this product is a joy to use, easy to cut and sticks like
'it to a blanket.Good luck
