Can some kind and clever soul tell me how many nauticle miles between
the following GPS numbers:

Lon East  138 deg  48.889
Lat South 35 deg 38.012

If you could also explain the maths to arrive at the distance that
would be helpful as well, or, perhaps some calculator on the web that
can be used.

Thanks

Seems you are in the South Australia area (Adelaide?)

Hello,

There are the coordinates of only one point. To have a distance we need
to have two distinct points??

One point is defined by Lat and Long

Lat is South or North  0 is Equator
Do a google search loxodromy and orthodomy
Long is West or Eas  0 is Greenwich meridian

There are two ways to determine the distance between two points. It
depends of the road to joign the two points. If you go from A to B with
a constant heading it's Loxodromy , If you go by the the shortest way
(along the earth circle from A to B) it's Orthodromy.

As you should know (good formula isn't it), one degree of arc on one
great circle around earth is 60 NM long.

Distance from A to B is
3437 is a constant (1/2 Earth diameter in NM)
3437 × acos [cos (Lat A) × cos (Lat B) × cos (Long B – Long A) + sin
(Lat A) × sin (Lat B)]

Do a google search loxodromy and orthodomy

Hope to help you

Hi Steve S

Thanks for the link. Solved our problem about the distance from the
center of our field to the nearest boundary fence of the local airport.
We just squeeze in to beat the local CASA regulations.

Now back to the fine Red I was drinking earlier .... ;-)
