EXHAUST MOUNTING ADVICE PLEASE?????

The aluminium exhaust on my Zenoah 23 fell off this afternoon despite the
bolts being checked for tightness (its a brand new exhaust). Thankfully it
was retained by the smoke pipe!!

The old standard exhaust never did that in countless flights.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that I should NOT use a gasket with an
aluminium exhaust - just a smear of epoxy.

Is that correct and might that be the cause of it working loose????

Any advice very welcome.

Thanks and all the best to everybody.

When you think that most of the glow engines come supplied with aluminum
exhausts and gaskets, I wouldn't imagine so.

The best approach, would be a 'belt and braces' one.

Lock washers on the silencer screws, a touch of Locktite on the screws
and perhaps, wire the silencer to the head, just in case it does it
again (unlikely!).

Make sure the screws are tight, but not over so.

Ensure there is no undue vibration caused, for example, by an
out-of-balance prop.

Sometimes, varying the prop position relative to the crankshaft can help
to minimise any out of balance forces.

Cheers

Al

I always smear epoxy round the manifold as a gasket and a small dab on the
bolts to hold them firm. never lost one.
If you find them hard to undo when needs be, ply a blow torch or heat gun on
the bolts and they'll wrench off okay.
