There was a restraint advertised somewhere a few weeks ago which looked like
a big skewer and a u piece at the top with some rubber protection around it.
Sold for about 10ukp I think.
Does any one know where I can get one of these here in the UK. I feel sure
it was a UK item and there was also a demo video with it.

I use a large Aluminium tent peg about 18 inches long,( from the £1 store)
and 2'6" of stout rope ( found on the beach) to loop around the tail
feathers.
You must be certain that your ARTF has been well constructed or you might
snap the tail off!
Why spend more?

Your last point is very interesting. however I need one to comply with our
club rules. I, frankly prefer not to use one. There have been quite a few
intances recently of models having their tailplanes snap and this has been
blamed on high speed flutter, thinking in terms of the Matrix-50's. The one
I am trying to find is no better or worse than your idea but is unlikely to
pull out. If your stake decided to leave terra-firma then I dread to think
of the damage which could happen with a large model possible being able to
pull it out. I would rather use none than use a tent stake. (Been there and
done it so I am not being hypacritical)
Being "screwed" in to the ground these are very unlikely to pull out. I just
have not seen the adverts lately.

Hi
A more secure alternative (slightly dearer) is to buy a dog restraint
from a pet shop and tie the rope to that. There is a picture of the
type I mean at <http://www.waudbys.co.uk/products/details/173.html>
but they should be available at any pet shop.

Nigel,
I got mine from SMC a year or so ago, but looking at their website they look
a bit on the expensive side:

Thanks but this wasnt the one as the one I want "screws" in to the ground.
Much safer and its cheaper - when I find them. lol

An alternative one but more expensive:

Same thing with this. It can pull out which defeats the object.

You would think that a model shop would know the difference between the
leading edge of the tailplane and the elevators! From the link you gave...:
"The restrainer is hammered firmly into the ground and holds the model
against the elevators."
I guess that in the big scheme of things it doesn't really matter, but you
expect "professionals" to get it right!!

Any doggy place will do one. big helix that screws into the ground, to
which a tether attaches to stop the dog from straying.
Or make something up - it's usually a foam covered U (hint: pipe
insulation foam and pipes soldered together) soldreed or fibergalssed
to something you can push into the ground..

I'm sure if you do a google search for handcuffs and straight-jackets you'll
find something suitable to restrain you from modelling for the foreseeable
future ;o)

I got one also.
Very well made, even has plastic stoppers in the ends of the tube to make it
look nice.
If you cant it over when you stick it in the ground (like a tent peg), would
restrain even a 30% 80cc model.
A bargain for £5
