Hi all, recently bought one of these chargers-I was looking for a
foolproof charger for my nimh's and nicads (and maybe eventually,
LiPo's)-I was assured that this was a virtual 'plug it in and forget
it' type of charger. As a complete novice to batteries and charging, it
sounded perfect. Sadly though, there is a requirement for a little
knowlege of amps/volts/mA's etc.....example-I have a Parkzone battery
pack which has on the side: 10.8v, 1000mAh (120). To set up a
charge/discharge cycle I need to input certain parameters for the
battery, ie 'discharge cut off voltage(?) but I'm stumped....Anyhow,
what I am asking here is if anyone knows of an 'idiot's guide' to
charging-(tried Googling but with no success).
TIA for any help or pointers!

if you just want to charge set it to auto and let it set it self but
dont try auto for LiPo's

Hi funfly, thanks for that, but I can't see an 'auto' setting-it
requires some input from the operator re charge current etc..
cheers

I thought it was similar to my Mercury EX if you press the right arrow
does the display then say auto charge ??

Nickel cadmium are charged at a constant current equal to their capacity
divided by twenty minutes. I.e a 1000mAh pack would be charged at no
more than 3A. There are no voltage implications, the charger will look
for a falling voltage after it is fully charged and cut back to trickle,
or off completely.

Nickel metal hydride are similar, except they should be charged at the
hourly rate..i.,e. 1000mAh pack should be charged at an amp. The voltage
drop is similar but smaller.

Lithium polymer can be charged at a current of up to their hourly
rating, but there is no way to detect a full pack other than the fact it
has reached a particular voltage of 4.2v per cell. i.e a 100mAh 3s LIPO
pack of a nominal 11.1v can be charged at a constant one amp, and should
terminate when the voltage reaches 12.6v. In practice the current tends
to fall towards the full state, and it takes more than one hour.

Discharge cut off voltage is when a charger is being used to check
battery capacity. Set it to about 0.8v per nickel cell and abot 3v per
cell for lithium. I do not recommend discharging lithium cells even that
far, but if you must...

I have a Prodigy I and I assume they work the same way. The instructions are
not the best however: The Cycle cut off volts for NiCd or NiMH are set on
the Discharge menu for that battery type. I use 1 volt per cell - so your
10.8v pack contains 10.8/1.2 = 9 cells, so I would set the discharge cut off
voltage to 9 volts. My Prodigy once I figured out the stuff not in the
instructions has proved to be a very versatile and useful charger on all
four battery types.

Hi Phil
Discharge to .9 volt per cell , some books will say .8 volt, others 1 volt ,
I have found .9 to be the best.
Hope this helps
