Hi,

I may be a bit slwo but I've just come across the following phrase at
<http://www.sandownmodelsymposium.com/> :

"After a run of over 30 years the curtain has finally dropped on the Sandown
Symposium."

Does anyone know if (presumeably) this means what it says and there will not be
a show at Sandown this year, or ever again ?

It does.  No Show this year, and none planned (although it may come
back it's unlikely)

Fram what I heard it was a combinations of stand prices for traders
getting too high so they stayed away and increased costs of the
insurance for the event.

IIRC they are taking over another show but can't remember which one.

according to the web
"The final decision to end Sandown was made in light of this new
legislation and an ever-changing market place that could have put at
risk the high standards of the event."

I think they over priced the event for traders a few years back and its
been going downhill ever since
I used to love seeing the brilliant flying and coming back with a great
offer or two, but it just got in "the same a last year" mode for me

They had a northern equivelant to Sandown at Doncaster Racecourse a few
years ago which was ony held for two years if i remember correctly and i am
unsure why this did not continue.

I went both times and it was ok but it was not on the scale of Sandown.

I  think this is symptomatic of greaat changes afoot in this country.

Sandown has gone.

Watford has gone.

In full size aviation the PFA Rally has gone.

All eventually priced and legislated out by stupid people in this
country.

But is this bad? probably not. In replacement of the PFA rally there
will be several small rallies, which sound to me to be much more fun.  I
hope there will be more regional "Sandowns" to replace what has become a
rather boring, expensive day out.  It's up to us though - find ye a
model site and lets go regional!

This is a general problem with shows and events, both public and
trade, most are shrinking and many disappearing.

Did I read that... the people who ran the Sandown show are going to take
over another show now that Sandown has gone ?

I did read a comment that traders had drifted away from Sandown because
of ever increasing prices.

Does this signal the demise of whichever show the ex-Sandown crowd are
going to take over ?

Having buggered up one show one suspects that they would then be on
course to bugger up the next one they get involved in !

The organisers for Sandown in 2005, and probably last year, were Traplet
Publications ltd., publishers of RCMW

I don't know about the Doncaster race course one, but was involved with a
Northern Model Show which was first at Newby Hall and later moved to Ripon
Race Course.

The Ripon event finished because a car boot sale organiser booked the venue
for every weekend and wouldn't stand down for the one weekend needed for the
model show. No other venue could be found in the area which would allow for
the same sort of event so it had to finish - much to the regret of everyone
involved as it covered all aspects of modelling - aircraft, water planes,
buggy racing, and boating - yachts and power including submarines - not to
mention some good support from the trade.
