Is there any reason why a standard rectangular fuel tank would not work with
the wide dimension across the fuselage rather than vertical. It is just that
there often seems to be a chance of better location of the tank to the
needle valve.
does it make any difference to the header change? Is it reduced in this way?

Fuel tanks may be put in any advantageous position, as seen in pusher
aircraft, ducted fan aircraft, turbines and boats with multi tanks, but may
need a header tank or pump.
Refer to: "Fuel facts & FAQ + Fuel Tank installations" on my web page for
various set up.
