Fail. ;-)

It's not down as such, just everybody has gone flying, or to web based
fora,  I suspect..

So at what point (and by whom) is the decision made to switch off the
machine and let the thing die?  I'm not sure how newsgroups are born, but
surely they don't exist forever and at some point dissolve into electronic
mist?

Actually they do.

about 40% of all NGs are either empty or esentially so: in that someone
comes along and posts, gets no amswer, and moves on.

They are after all only a single line entry on a news servers  file. Its
not worth deleting them.

About the only thing I ever post here is 'go to a web based forum, its
so much better'

I dont think it is "better" its more difficult and more time consuming
to try and look through the new questions on a forum than it is on a
newsgroup

I'm with you Kevin.

One of the really GOOD parts of the newsgroup system is that you get to see
posts from people doing other things.

we hear from the people flying gliders,  the ones "flying" helis,  the builders,
the ARF enthusiasts,  everyone welcome.

the on-line "stuff" is all insular and dedicated to just ONE specific interest.

personally,  I don't have the time, the patience, or the connection speed to
even consider going to the online sites.

If other people want to waste infinite amounts of time rummaging around sites
like that,  I don't object,  but I'll never be convinced that it is a "better"
approach to sharing information.

YMMV
