I have just renewed my BMFA membership myself, and I am now a country member
rather than the member via a club.

What is the difference if any between the 2 different types of membership?

Absolutely nothing.  Except that as a country member you have to sort yourself
out.  However, a club needs at least 5 "via-the-club" members to remain BMFA
affiliated.  If they're in dire straits, though, and they can get some
country members to agree, a BMFA member can change their membership type
for the year even after they've paid, thus helping retain the club's
affiliated status.

Oh, also, if you've not paid by the end of the year I think your country
membership ceases until you've paid again.  A club member has a grace
period until the 16th of Jan or so, to allow the club to sort stuff out.
Or so I believe anyway.  If it's true it obviously affects your insurance,
or the club's if you fly at an affiliated club as a country member.

So apart from those things, nothing.  So tell me, what have the Romans done
for us exactly?

Not sure that's true, your insurance lapses on the 31st Dec.
regardless of your membership.

Main difference is as long as you've paid the club (who may not have
forwarded it to the bmfa, depends on timing I guess)  you are covered
by insurance.
