charging sealed lead acid batteries safely

Sorry if this has been posted before on this newsgroup, but is it safe to
charge a sealed lead acid battery (eg:12V 7Ah sealed) with a conventional 12
V domestic car battery charger, or would it be better for me to use my Super
Nova charger from another well charged 12V car battery.
I am worried that the car charger may charge at too high a current for a
sealed battery.
Although these batteries are described as sealed are they actually vented.
Thanks in advance

Chris.

It is ok  so long as you put a 21 watt tail light bulb in the circuit. It
will glow brightly at first and as the charge is absorbed by the battery and
the resistance builds , the light will slowly extinguish. I use this with a
3-5 amp Car battery charger (Gunson 5)

No problem with a normal charger.

Probably but be careful. Taillight bulb in the circuit sounds like a good
idea. I use a full size charger in parallel across an old half-knackered 12v
gel cell when  charging my 3Ah NiMhs, which works fine, although left
connected the gel cell will get pretty hot within about 3 hours, from which
i'd deduct that a car battery charger may work but is probably not very kind
to 7Ah cells

Most cells have the charging requirements printed on them.  Many car
chargers will grossly overcharge these smaller batteries.  If you are unsure
as to proper charging, visit Red's Battery Clinic web site for the proper
information.

Require CVC charger with max charge rate of 600 mAH to prevent venting of
cell or permanent separation of electrolyte from plates.
best seen were the Ace CVC SLA battery chargers for 6 & 12V. were available
as a kit or RTU.
A very simple fully regulated at constant 13.6V in  circuit is available to
use with 16V transformers from slot car sets such as AFX and Tyco - leave on
permanently or check whether you can simple plug in with the charger of your
home security system's SLA.

I use a standard DC wall wart at 14.5v.  It will charge at 500mA max and the
charge rate drops to about 50mA when the battery is fully charged.

I use one of these... http://www.ctek.se/index_GB.htm
The best spent money ever, it charges
everything between lawnmowers, ATV's and motorcycles to mobilehomes and
trolling boat batterys around here..

Since we have a lot of stuff to charge (and yet only one charger) we put
pigtails on each battery, so we can connect it without hazzle to any of
them.
On the Harley and one of the Suzuki´s the batterys are relatively easy to
get to, but on the custom Suzuki, it is a PITA, on the mobilhome it is also
kind of squeezed in, so those pigtails with connectors are worth their
weight in gold (and that's almost the prize of them too, one is included
with the charger though)

There is also an optional pigtail that you plug in to the lighter output on
whatever you are charging, it doesnt work for me, since the lighter doesnt
work with the key off...

I would have made my own pigtails cheap, if it wasn't for the fact that I
got a bunch for free...
I am however going to buy another charger, the trolling boat is on constant
trickle all summer...

Btw, I am in no way connected to CTEK, other then as a buyer of their
products, but after this post, I should be head of PR..
