Our little Nokia CRT telly has suddenly lost one colour in a band at
the top of the screen, and another at the bottom. This was sudden and
it hasn't deteriorated since. My assumption is that the set is now a
bin job, but might it be a simple adjustment which has gone wrong? I
don't watch it much, but the kids do.
Also anyone recently bought a 17" or 19" LCD telly who can comment on,
for or against, what they've bought?

Thanks

I take it you've tried percussive maintenance?

the other thing it might need is degaussing.  You might find your local
telly-fixer has a degausser.

Sounds like the various colour beams have got out of alignment.

http://www.repairfaq.org/REPAIR/F_tvfaq.html sometimes helps, but I'd
get new one.

I've a hunch (as an electronic engineer) that an LCD tv should outlast
an equivalent quality CRT, despite what a number of consumer sites
suggest; there are simply fewer bad things inside - like high voltage &
power parts - that cause early failure.

My experience with LCD monitors is not good.

Out of a batch of 12, only one was still at full brightness after 3
years and one was binned after failure of the cold cathode lamp.
Replacement of the lamps was 60% of the cost of new ones.

The problem started to  get worse, replacing it seemed the only
sensible option.
One set which looked as though it would have fit the bill well -
though more money than the piggy bank could run to - was a smallish
LCD Toshiba. I was looking around for the best price for it over
several days on the net, and was surprised how much daily variation
there seemed to be even from the big name retailers. Up & down by
about 15% at Dixons within two days, for instance. Also the same model
in 'graded' stock on ebay was bid to above the cheapest online
'perfect' price yet didn't reach its reserve.

In the end I got a slightly used iiyama lcd set on ebay for less than
half the cost, I know them as makers of decent computer monitors
rather than TVs. It seems to be a good set except for one thing - it
has a bl**dy fan inside! Nice quiet fan, but you still know it's there
when the sound is low :-(
How common is this in such things?

Thanks to all for suggestions.

Some of the newer stuff is fan free, but anything that keeps the inside
temperature down is useful. I know what you mean though. I've a Sony
DVD/VHS player that one can here the disk spinning with the volume low.
End up having to turn it up to hide the noise :(

I got round the problem of the noise in the office from computer fans -
the computers are out in the garage - so a monitor with a fan would be
annoying ;)

The Iiyama is basically a monitor with built-in audio and a plug-in
tuner and some serviceable speakers hooked on the sides.
We've got a little el-cheapo Relisys branded telly which is the same
configuration, it does get slightly warm but has no fan; my computer
monitor is a Samsung LCD which runs almost stone cold.
Is it the audio amp which produces most of the heat?

Cheers

You won't see even 50% efficiency out of a reasonably sized amplifier at a
reasonable output. Theoretical best efficiency of a class B output stage at
full output is 78% but that doesn't include the rest of the losses in the
system or the fact that amps are run in class AB, which is less efficient.

Efficiency of a class B output stage gets much worse at lower outputs such
that at half rated power, the total losses are highest.

None of which would prevent the manufacturers building proper metal cases with
fins on if the felt the punters would pay for it :-(

Actually the 17" Suyamas that I am look at now have no speakers and are
both cold, but the 17" Proview with speakers in the garage is warm at
the top. I suspect though it's how the backlight is generated that is
the difference.

It's probably the lamp.

Incidently, if you have to replace the bulb it will cost you about half the
price of a new unit !!!!!

Put a strip of Masking tape across to top and bottom of the screen and tell
everyone you have a wide screen television ;-)

When the only tools you have are a Bridgeport, a CNC Taig Mill, a Colchester
and assorted other stuff, every problem looks like a steam engine.

I like that idea (both versions) ;-)

I'm looking out for a replacement, in the meantime it makes the Beeb's
high-tech weather maps much more fun with multicoloured rain <G>

Thanks to all
