Greetings all,

I'm on the lookout for a meaty transformer as the basis of a single to 3
phase converter for 3 to 4 HP
This could be an auto transformer 230 in -415 out
or
a 230in 115 out isolating transformer with some taps on the 230 volt winding
enabling me to connect mains into a lower voltage tap designed for say 210v
and put the secondary in series with the primary to get around 400-440 volts
out.

Anyone got anything lying around to swap for beer vouchers or eternal
gratitude etc??

TIA

That's one of the reasons I've got one. Haven't plumbed it in yet though...
240+110+55=405.

I'd much rather find a 240/415 transformer for a good price, but they don't
seem to be as cheap or easy to get retail in on-offs at 2-3kVA sizes.

If you find a source tell us!
My homebrew version is running two large 415v to 55-0-55 transformers
"in reverse" with series input and parallel outputs (a Pentagrid Jim
suggestion). Works OK
Transwave will sell you a bare tranny as a start point.

I had a transformer built for my converter by JMS transformers in
Peterborough a couple of years ago, they did an 8KVA unit in a floor
standing case for £155; they can be contacted by email at
jms@transformers.gb.com (usual disclaimers apply).

Bob,

A few years ago someone here contacted one of the converter companies
("Boost"?) and persuaded them to sell a couple of transformers for a
sensible (but not cheap) price - it might be worth a few calls.

Hi Dave & other respondants

Ive been in touch with both a transformer manufacturer (Douglas) and http://www.powercapacitors.co.uk/transwave.htm.

The latter seem completely happy to sell the transformers that they use in their products. As an example, the tranny from this model
http://tinyurl.com/ybpcxj

they will sell for £108 plus 10.50 carriage all plus vat total 'bout £139

This is cheaper than Douglas.

I guess this is not too bad a price although more beer vouchers than I currently have to spare for the project.
Maybe I could sell the excesses of Christmas socks, handkerchiefs, slippers etc on Fleabay to raise funds?

Regards

Bob,

I bought a transformer direct from Transwave a few years back when I
made a 10KW converter (I think it's the one Tim Leech now has) - they
were excellent to deal with, brought it to the ME show at Wembley
(that dates it!) and the chap even lugged it into my car boot as I had
a dicky back at the time. I'd done a lot of searching arround and they
were the best deal I could find.

Andrew, would that have been the converter that I gave you
a whole load of capacitors in exchange for a 3 phase motor for my compressor
a good few years ago?
Your post just stirred my memory

Yes Bob, that's the one - many years ago wasn't it !!!!

Hang on until we move the factory. We used to have some 230/415 trannies for
some spot welders that we sold, and I think the transformers may well be lurking
under benches in the factory, covered in 20+ years of dead spiders and dust.

I'll have a tentative poke around after Xmas when we move out the coilwinding
gear and have a bit of free space.

No promises!  but they should still be there, somewhere....

Because the spot welders were 415V single-phase input, we had to have the
trannies made to run them off 240V 13A sockets, and when the welders went I am
sure we didn't let the transformers go with them.

We've been in the factory since it was new, 23 years this coming Xmas....

Seems like yesterday....

Indeed. Should you find a horde, I could be interested too :-).

I guess if we actually had a horde, we'd be looking for two new factories, not
one!

New place is just round the corner from where we live, so a minute or so to walk
to work each morning rather than hour and a half or more and the same at night.

Also nearly twice as big, so room for yet more junk.... :-))
