Who's design is the loco?
Which end is he trying to disconnect, the crosshead or the piston?
They could be connected in a multitude of different ways.

As an alternative, can the piston/rod/crosshead not be removed as an
assembly?

He would like to disconnect the crosshead end so he can remove the cyc cover
and put the "O" ring on

The Piston would usually be permanently screwed onto the piston rod so
you need to split the rod from the crosshead.
