I purchased 3 x 400ml aerosol cans of 'oily brown gunge' from Scewfix a couple of years ago at quite a reasonable price (about £3.60) but I now find that they no longer stock it. Farnell have 2 or 3 available at far greater cost or a carton of a dozen is available at many distibutors. I found it to be very good to in getting the stuff to the right place without getting gallons of smelly stuff everywhere. Anyone know of a source at a reasonable price and without an £8.95 delivery charge? For most things (model size jobs on a Myford) I use neat cutting oil which you can buy from Warco in reasonable quantities. I use a chemist's squeezy wash bottle to apply it (you can get them from kitchen suppliers quite easily). Allows anything from a dropwise application to a parting tool through to squirting down deep holes for drilling and is cheap and effective. I also have an aerosol can of “Tap and Drill” fluid from: Pearson and Williams, Marmion Road, Hove, 01273 733940 I bought it from our workshop at work, where they use it for drilling and tapping in stainless steel. I assume they buy it in quantity, but you could try a phone call or any local engineers' supplier. Great stuff, but the Warco oil is usually fine. The one I'm using now is a Mr Muscle one, but if it eventually perishes, replacement is effectively free. There's some stuff called CT90 by ActionCan (prepend and append www. and .com respectively) that works nicely. Quite possibly the same stuff as Screwfix's because the man who runs ToolStation owned Screwfix before selling out to B&Q. The lathe has a sort-of functional coolant pump, and on the big drill I use a 1.99 special Ikea plant-squirter to squirt it.
