Hi Guys
I thought I would show off my efforts for your comments (cringe).
Over the past few years I have been designing and building a
variation on the Metalmaster. It is made from solid cast iron blocks
and standard mild steel sections to avoid making castings. The
essential difference to the Metalmaster is that the bed remains
stationary and supported at each end and the head and tailstock can be
raised or lowered relative to the bed. A secondary vertical column is
incorporated in the integral tailstock to avoid an unsupported overarm
and tailstock. The machine uses stepper motors to drive each axis. A
separate stepper motor is dedicated to driving the headstock
(Stepperhead) The axes can be operated either manually, power driven
by the stepper motors or CNC operated via the lap top computer. I
entered this machine in the Model Engineers Exhibition in 2008 at
Ascot UK where it was awarded a Gold Medal and The Bowyer-Lowe Trophy.
I have written an article which will be printed in the Model Engineers
Workshop soon.I have also added some dodgy videos on utube and some
pics on Flickr

Alan,

I saw this at Ascot - very impressive indeed - prizes well deserved.

I particularly liked all the accessories (milling spindle, etc...) -
you had more than you show on Flickr on the bench under the machine
(at the show, at least), as I recall..

Does the Spindle always turn the 'wrong' way, or is that only an
option that you describe on the photo captions ? The topslide
construction suggests more conventional rotation....

Cheers,

Youra

Youra,
I have only shown a few pictures on Flickr of the other devices I will
add on the boring head later. The machine normally rotates in the
conventional anti- clockwise direction, I was just trying to show that
it can equally run the opposite way and gain some advantages.

Alan -

That is an impressive peice of work.

How do you find it in practice from the point of view of
stiffness/accuracy?

Tony

Thank you Tony,
It is much better than I expected. It can turn quite parallel and
gives a good finish and I am no CNC expert but it works well. The feed
screws are only acme and the design maybe considered quirky, to be
honest I am still in test mode.

For you it is a rendered drawing and the long text is to expose those
with a limited attention span - like you

Sorry Alan, I am a jerk. You really did built it..! Just could not believe
it when seeing the pictures. Now having seen and read it all, I feel deeply
ashamed.

Dirk,
There is no need to apologize. I can see what you are saying, I added
the long verbiage too try and explain/justify the unconventional
design.
It is up for criticism/opinion so steam in.

Wow!
I'm impressed as I didn't realise that rendered drawings could look so good.
