James,
I first went along many many years ago and then again a couple of years
ago. I found it useful to start with the second time but then the
lecturer left/retired and the new guy was less able to find time to
teach. Basically there were too many attendees and not enough staff -
fine if all you want is access to machines but not so good if you want
to learn techniques.
Have you any idea what the set-up is going to be this term?

Hi Dave,
I can't speek from very recent experience as the last years courses
did not run due to low numbers (hence my post). In recent years there
have been two tutors, this is a health and safety issue so is unlikely
to change. For the two years that I attended the tutors were the head
of department (a time served mould maker and very knowledgable) and
the workshop assistant (an accomplished welder and pretty good on
mechanics too). The teaching was definately on an a.s required
basis. The way each course was run was that on the first day a
general assesment of each students ability and needs was made and
things adjustred accordingly. Those of us who had been before and
knew what we wanted to do were basically left to our own devices with
help when required. Those new students with a definate project in
mind were helped to get going and guided as their abilities required.
Thos with little or no experience were set the basic training pieces
that each new student to the college goes through and led every step
of the way.
Obviously I cannot gaurantee that this format will be followed as I
have no connection with the college other than a past student.
However I would be surprised if something similar was not followed.
Hope this helps
Kind Regards
James

Thanks James, I probably won't make it in October but I'll try harder
for January.
