Are bending rolls the best tool, especially to get rid
of the corrugations which seem to be part of modern cans
in order to get away with thinner steel?

Have a visit to your local 'Chip Shop' and get an empty cooking oil can. The
cooking oil cans do not have corrugations.
Very handy source for making tin plate models
