JLO Mower engine

Hi there,

I have an old mower to repair for a friend, it turned out to be a
damaged piston, but the only references to the JLO engine, that I can
find in the internet are from Canada and the USA  and then they were
used in snow mobiles!

Does anyone know of a Company in UK that can supply replacement
pistons and rings to a pattern or sample.  This is all that is
required as the rest of the engine is quite good and the cast iron
bore has not been damaged. The alloy head is peppered with broken
piston ring bits, but is still useable.

The engine concerned is aType L252L made in Germany - probably in the
60's or 70's  and is a 247 cc two stroke, with the crank mounted
vertically to drive a rotary cutter and having a separate drive to the
tyres of two of the 4 rear wheels.

Any leads will be welcome.   Thanks a lot George.

Hi George:

It is ILO not JLO, the stylised 'I' looks like a 'J'.

The company was absorbed by Rockwell - Tecumseh some years ago, and to my
knowledge, nothing exists in the way of spares supply for these engines.

The last number I had for the UK side for Tecumseh was 01784 456301  Fax 460684.

I believe that the 252 refers to the capacityin cc, I have an L372 on a 4kVA
generator.

Hope this helps.

Peter

Thanks Peter,   I have done quite a lot of investigation myself, but
decided that I shall have to have a piston made or I might be able to
fabricate one from a blank. There must be quite a demand for
replacement pistons, someone must be doing something.  The engine
plate says the type number i.e. L252L and it says that the  Hubr.
(German for swept volume??)  is 247 cm3  so 252  is just a model, I
would say.  It is quite a high revving engine, I would say, so I can't
replace it with a Briggs & Stratton, unless I change the pulleys too,
- and the belts.  What about rings, I seem to remember that these are
available, but where?

Rockwell does not seem to be into engines - except for aeroplanes.

Thanks and regards George.

Rockwell owned Tecumseh, probably all gone now as 2-strokes are not good on
emissions.

Look on ebay.com:

and on ebay.de

The L372 is 372cc, the L252 is, as you say, 247cc.

Bore is 66mm for your engine.

Sounds like you need a good old fashioned engine shop to help you find
a suitable alternative piston. There's almost certainly one that will
fit with a little modification

Where abouts are you based?

I suggest you buy a classic motorcycle magazine, there are various
specialists that supply pistons for obscure old bikes, they may be
able to help.

Lots of good advice - thank you all.  I am in Norfolk and although the
mower is not worth much, I do like to fix things.  Most old stuff is
more fixable than new, so I have a lot of old stuff.

My friend is now talking about spending £300 pounds on a new engine,
but I wouldn't like to see him waste his money, something else is
bound to go wrong!  I was rather hoping that there was a register of
pistons somewhere, so I could find something with the same
dimensions , configuration and weight,  I shall have another look at
ebay, although my German is not up to much. I'll have a look at those
links too, Peter.

Regards George.

http://www.jvmotors.nl/ says to have 6000 pistons in stock.
Click on "Pistons", search the lists, where "Tweetakt" is "two stroke"
and "Viertakt" is "four stroke".
