For those who don't normally read Nigel Burkin's web site, this is what he has
to say about the subject:-

http://www.nigelburkin.co.uk/OMWB2004/OMWB.asp

For those unfamiliar with the name, Nigel is a long time contributor to British
Railway Modelling magazine and now editor of its Modern Railway Modelling
magazine offshoot. Am just curious if the 4-Cig unit he mentions is any
relation to the old green boneshakers which used to ferry pasengers between
Whitstable and Margate in the 1960's?

In the 1960s, the CIGs were largely confined to the Brighton Line. The units
on the Kent Coast line would probably have been the 4 CEPs- if you thought
they were boneshakers then, you should have travelled on them in more recent
times ! They've only recently been withdrawn after almost 40 years in
service.

And if you thought the above BR 'standard' designs were bone shakers you
should have travelled on some of their fore-bares, I've heard it on good
authority [1] that on some units the drivers had to wedge themselves into
their seats ! Brighton Belle set 5053 was meant to have been bad in this
respect...

To be fair, they have taken a hell of a lot of passengers over the years! -
I'm sorry to see them go, if only because it's just weird to go to
Eastbourne/Brighton station and NOT see them there.

Still, it's a shame the 4-BIGS went from the Eastbourne-London services a
few (well, about 12 I imagine now) years ago. I will always remember getting
the early bus and then having breakfast on the train on trips to London with
my Gran and Auntie!

On a modelling front, if it's any good, and, even better, if there are later
variations with similar tooling (as mentioned on Nigel Burkin's website), I
would be tempted to model a station very close to home for a change. In
fact, I might even dig out my modellers license and ressurect the Cuckoo
Line....

Some must have made it on the South Western in the sixties as they were
replacing the Nelsons.

They've not all been withdrawn, and on today's tour the 12-CEP did 69
minutes from Dover Priory to Victoria;  a splendid performance!
