I'm seriously thinking of moving into scratchbuilding
for some new stock (simple locos, trams, carriages &
wagons - EM gauge - yes, I've got the EM Society's
handbook (and pretty good it is too)).

Suggestions for a reference book from start to finish?

Thanks.

A bit dated now but still relevant, there is a book by Guy Williams
(of Pendon fame), it was regarded as the standard work back in the
1980's IIRC.

Model Locomotive Construction In 4mm Scale

by Guy Williams, Published by Ian Allan in 1979

A quick search on http://www.ukbookworld.com showed several used
copies available.

The book is based on a series of articles Mr. Williams wrote for the
Model Railway Constructor (sadly missed since its demise), by the lead
locomotive builder on the Pendon team.

Thoroughly recommended, even today.
