Are you having trouble getting news from Demon? I've had nothing of any
note for over two weeks now. Is it time to consider changing ISP's after
all these years?

At work I collect news from Demon, and there are loads of missing posts -
I know that because my own ISP is Zen, and there are actually loads of
posts.  If my ISP was Demon I would be well p***ed off.

Rather than change ISP, I can heartily recommend the free text only news
server news.albasani.net.   Good retention and I don't seem to lose
anything.   You sign up here http://albasani.net/index.html.en .

Or news.motzarella.org which is also free and good.

I tried Motzarella before Albasani and I have found that the latter has a
greater retention period.   Other than that there is little to choose
between them.

Other than for binary groups I really don't see much point in high
retention, most discussions are either topical or very 'conversion
like' - who would going into a pub and try to restart a month old
conversation?... If you want to check on who said what etc. weeks
after the event that is were Google comes into play, and dare I say
what Google groups should only be used for.

I pay a very modest annual subscription to Supernews which also allows
access to binary groups.  Well worth paying for the railway images available
on alt.binaries.pictures.rail - especially if you like American prototypes.

Several NSPs sell non-expiring blocks from $2 up, for occasional binary
users. You only pay for the bandwidth you use, and posting is unlimited.
I use Usenet-News - http://www.usenet-news.net.

Some things never go out of fashion:

C: Never mind that, my lad. I wish to complain about this news server
what I paid to access not half an hour ago at this very boutique.
G: Oh yes, the, uh, the Norwegian Blue...What's,uh...What's wrong with
it?
C: I'll tell you what's wrong with it, my lad. It's dead, that's
what's wrong with it!
G: No, no, it's uh,...it's just busy.
C: Look, matey, I know a dead news server when I see one, and I'm
looking at one right now.
G: No no it's not dead, it's, it's busy'! Remarkable server, the
Norwegian Blue, idn'it, ay? Beautiful processors!
C: The processors don't enter into it. It's stone dead.

The Demon specific newsgroups have had weeks of posts about the Demon
news-server being broken.  Obvious conclusion is that Demon consider it a
low priority to restore a proper service.

So, need to look elsewhere.  Others have given lists of free services (I use
one of them). Alternative is the 10-Euro a year "news.individual.net"
service.

If you were paying Demon because of their news servers, I'd look at
alternatives such as IDNet, Zen, etc..  They might not all offer news
servers (see above for that solution), but currently seem to offer better
ISP services.

Welcome back Nigel!

I say "welcome back" because my newsreader and/or/newsserver has been
blocking your posts for as long as I can remember and for no good reason
that I could think of? There's a couple of other posters here being blocked
as well. I can only read replies to their posts and not the originals.

Crumbs! The only message in this thread that I received was my own one
and the one I am replying to. I need to talk to Demon to find out what
is happening with their news feed.

Jane

I think that the Demon staff are well aware of the problem but do not
seem to have an answer. When I spoke to them the 'tech' guy muttered
something about 'working with a third party'. I was sent a customer
survey which I filled in with several Level 1 ticks (the lowest).

It seems like we need a lot of people to complain but whether or not
they can fix the problem remains to be seen

There are quite a few people affected. I contacted Demon on Monday
morning, eventually ending up talking to a 'tech' guy who sent me a
Demon Customer Survey e-mail which I've duly completed showing my
displeasure - there were a few 1 out of 10 scores from me.

I got the impression that, although he couldn't say it, the tech guy was
just as p***ed off as the rest of us. It seems that Demon are working
with a third party on this issue, Whether this is before after the
recent loss of news I couldn't establish.

Hope this one gets out to the wide world. Try and post a reply, even if
it's just a 'me too' so that we can see if anything is getting through.

Just spoke to Demon about this. The techy finally admitted that they
have had a problem with their news server for 1 1/2 months and that it
will be some weeks before the problem is resolved. They are having a
new server with a third party ?? but it is still not ready yet.

When I asked about a rebate for loss of service, I was told that when
the service resumes to contact them regarding compensation as a large
number of their customers have already asked this question.

Nice of them to let us know isn't it!

Regards.
