Clear plastic for windows? Thin wood?

Alun - 20 Apr 2009 08:41 GMT Where can one obtain quantities of clear plastic or perspex, (preferably with the protective rubber films which are removed upon installation)?
Would the windows from mobile phones do?
Also, how does one go about gluing these shiny plastics?
Or, even, is there a supply of real glass in thin but robust sizes?
-----ooooo-----
Also, what about obtaining thin (1/32") sheets of Birch ply, without paying the exorbitant costs of model railway emporia. I'm quite capable of cutting up large sheets without having to pay someone else a premium for having done so.
John Turner - 20 Apr 2009 08:55 GMT > Where can one obtain quantities of clear plastic or > perspex, (preferably with the protective rubber > films which are removed upon installation)? Try your local model shop - clear plastic is readily available in mine.
John.

I've read on the web about using microscope slides suitably adjusted - on the MIGO site I think. I'm getting near needing windows for my 08 and intend giving it a try.

They were glass, I'm sure you can get plastic ones now.

I got a couple of small boxes of microscope slide covers via my brother more than 20 years ago when he worked with microscopes, and it is more than a lifetime's worth

I've bought thin (1mm) sheets of perspex from eBay, or if you're lucky enough to have a local model shop, try there.

Paul Boyd - 20 Apr 2009 19:10 GMT > As I said, "without paying the exorbitant costs > of model railway emporia". You really don't want to be helped, do you? The Model Dockyard sell absolutely nothing related to model railways. The perspex sold on eBay is from a a plastics supplier, not "model railway emporia".
Why do you bother asking questions here if you won't take any notice of answers?

You still haven't explained why you asked a question then instead of reading the answer, you insult people. The only reason is trolling.

Errr I have had success with clear plastic packaging for glazing, and its free, or at least a byproduct of another purchase, but some experimenting with glues is required as its is all different.
Just a thought

I have used laminate sheets ( like for A4 paper ) and just heat 'laminated' it together. Glue from hot glue gun applied with pin !
" without paying the exorbitant costs of model railway emporia " You pay for what you get. A GOOD model railway shop with good staff is a god send.

Heres a few, except for the first one they are not in order of preference.....
John Turner http://www.53amodels.co.uk/ Branchlines (see model mags for advert) Mainly Trains http://www.mainlytrains.co.uk/acatalog/index.html Derby Railway Bookshops (for new books - got his address and phone number somewhere) Nick Tozer http://www.railwaybook.com/ (for 2nd hand books) Rural Railways for various kit stuff (got an email address somewhere) Len Smith http://www.rmrailways.co.uk/ Paul at Church Gresley. Mercian Models http://www.modelrailways.tv/
Plus one of the best :- Really nice bloke that used to have the table - with vast selection of secondhand stuff - usually at the right hand end of the 3rd row in hall at Donington. However they wont be having any more fairs there for a year or more as theyre knocking down the exhibition hall and putting up a new stand. Hall may be rebuilt .... He does do other fairs such as NEC though.
Although their prices can be the lowest, none are selected on price as the primary criteria. Service comes first. omission from the list does not imply anything and I have no connection, take no responsibility .....etc etc If you want any more info then let me know. Cheers, Simon
