I am about to resurrect a model yacht that my father had as a boy ( circa
1910).
It is carved from a solid piece of wood and has what I would call classical
Fyffe lines.
What I have is the hull,
the rudder
the lead keel
and internally a mast step.
The yacht is 34.5" o/a and 6.5" on the beam from the deck to the bottom of
the keel
How large should the mast be?
Should there be a bow sprit?
I am assuming triangular sails as I wish to utilise r/c control
How should I calculate the required sail area for the main and the jib?
Where can I obtain relevant useful information?
Any help appreciated

It sounds an interesting project. I am restoring a beautiful 70"
1930's racing boat and have come across similar probelms.
As it is 1910 I assume that the boat is long keel with big overhangs
fore and aft. Originally it probably had gaff rig and if you convert
to bermudan you may find that the sail area you can carry is limited
as bermudan has greater heeling moment. At a guess (and its only that)
a 40 in mast and about 300 sq in sail will be about right. Main / jib
sail area depends on mast postion, 2:1 may be a starting point.
If you can post a photo somewhere or e-mail me I may be able to help
more.
If it is well built and really dates from 1910 you should be aware of
its potential value and may want to resore it in period with wooden
mast, canvas cotton sails etc. I have no idea of value but my boat has
been valued in excess of £1000 "as is" provided I don't spoil it with
modern gear and up to £ 2000 if fully restored in period!

I have several catalogs from the era whose drawings are probably
accurate enough to get sail dimensions from. Email me with
photos if you have them and we'll go from there. I can also put
you in touch with the UK Vintage Group.

JB,
Take a look thru the US Vintage Model Yacht site. You may find something
appropriate to your search.
