Hi All,
Im almost new to fast RC boats, but I'm exprenced in constructional
techniques as I've built RC aircraft in the past.

My questions are...

I have a fibreglass hull, around 820mm long and intend to build
something into it.. as I say I'm capable but quetions remain!

1) It weighs around 1.5kg without any running gear, battery or radio or
decking fitted, so my all up weight icuding a 12V pack, servo, ESC, 2 x
motors.. is going over 3kg. Is that now too heavy?

2) I can build one from scratch from some plans downloaded from here,
but whats the finishing technique, build from Balsa/ply etc then glass
fibre the hull?

3) Where should the centre of gravity be?

Any input much appreciated!

That seems extremely heavy. Is it a fiberglass hull or wood? Is it racing or
scale (tugboat, etc)? For a mono hull or catamaran racing boat I always
start with the CG at approx. 30-33% of the length of the hull from the
stern. On a hydro, I try to balance just at the rear edge of the sponsons.

Details as follows :-

- Fibreglass hull
- 34" Length
- 12" Beam
- 1.2kg weight (empty, no R/C, motors props etc)
- Racing Mono Hull

Its great to think I'm not alone - thanks for any help! :)

Yes 30-33% is close. I believe 29% is the magic #. I build my own wooden
boats, monos mainly, i lift the boat empty till it is level and mark. I
lay all my equipment in boat around the the mark except rx and rudder
servo. Each are placed close to opposite rear corners. Now with lipos,
i have to move motor towards the bow just alittle due to weight
difference of lipos compared to nimh cells. The difference is about 5
oz. in favor of lipos. I have found that i do not need trim tabs. When
i build a mono, i put on full lenght strakes with the last portion of
strakes looking like steps which raises transom and gives a good ride
attitude. I experimented with a No Step 1 and ran strakes to and
including transom and works great. I did this also with a wooden El
Lobo II plus ran strut down 1 degree negative and ended up with a very
low roostertail and no trim tabs and small turn fins without much drag.
Lipos are in saddle pack formation for easy cg purposes. Good luck and
have fun. I would go BL systems that are waterproof. Now this may not
be the route you want to take, but i did and thought it might help in
some degree.
