If you are using a flex cable, they are wound in a way that makes the
water travel back up the stuffing tube.  As you have already suggested,
a piece of hose that is a nice fit on the shaft and glued to the
stuffing tube is often the go in this situation.  If you are really
concerned with a lot of water in your hull, you can also buy an auto
bailer that will let the excess water drain out the back of your hull
when you are moving.

leak the other day and i  came up with a design for a suction pump to
pull water through the hull and out and then i got on the net and found
a design to do the exact thing i was planing so i figured i would tri it
if it works i will be the perfect answer thanks

If your flex cable is wound the right way it should actually be pushing
water out of the boat when turning. I've never had this problem
personally and if you're moving forward there certainly shouldn't be
any water entering around the shaft.  Doug
