I find automotive paints to work quite well.  The type you buy in little
spray cans.  After colouring, a good clear goes quite well also.

Automotive paints do work well.  I buy quarts from the mis-mixed bin at a
local paint supplier.  The paints in the pre-mixed spray cans is different
from what you get by the quart.  The bulk purchased paint gives a finer
finish, but needs a clear coat to get a gloss finish that the spray can
paint does not need.  If you need a fuel proof the finish, try water based
polyurethane spray as a clear coat.

I've also used Krylon brand spray paints.  They dry very quickly, but their
gloss level and smoothness of finish vary from color to color.  Do not use
their clear spray as a clear coat.  It is not fuel proof and can cause some
colors to "orange peel".

Finally, I've had good luck using water based "Kilz" primer.  It dries
quickly and 2-3 coats, with sanding between, can fill in balsa grain and
minor flaws, giving a very smooth surface for the final paint.  Hope this
helps.
