I am finding difficulty in getting information about sail servos.
How powerful must they be
What movement should they have ( standard ones don't seen to move much)
Are rotary servos best
Is there a site which can relate information in layman's terms?

refer to

scroll down to

Boats, Yachts, Submarines, Warship Combat and Nautical reviews

sub section = "Reviews, Plans, FAQ & Tips, Jet drive".
and check links & downloads amongst which are =
"Servo 180 and 360 degree mods + Fit servos to yachts & boats. " ***
"How to Sail fast_ Rig tuning by Bob Sterne "
"RC Sailboat FAQ "
see also much further down many other good tips under
"Radio Systems, Accessories, Alterations and FAQ"
sub section =
"Servo & TX alterations, calculators, clonepacs, make an ESC or winch, FAQ."

if all else fails, email me direct for specific info.

From the Allan's Hobby reply, it would appear that sail servos can cost more
than a boat!!!!

What do they use in Kit yachts - they seem adequate
In layman's terms please

Standard Kitset yachts generally quote the following guides (one sometimes
see a label advising  model will sail with standard radio set = standard
yacht set as below, not a standard cheap car set with two low cost servos. =

30cm ( 12" Footy class) Hitec HS225BB compact high strength expensive servo.

31cm to 60cm = standard Hitec HS322 servo with swing arm.
English Metric
Torque 4.8/6.0v :  42 / 51 oz 3.0 / 3.7 kg.

refer =
http://www.hitecrcd.com/Servos/hs322hd.htm

60 - 85 cm length usually a heavy duty servo with at least
English Metric
Torque 4.8/6.0v :  69/83 oz. 5.5 / 6 kg

replacing the old HS605BB  is the new =
http://www.hitecrcd.com/Servos/hs635HB.htm

85cm to 130cm = specialty sailarm servo English Metric
Torque 4.8/6.0v :  161 / 201 oz. 11.6 / 14.5 kg.
http://www.hitecrcd.com/Servos/hs715.htm
(or see the more expensive lower powered  Futaba S3802 sail servo.)
If racing a Seawind, Yamaha, Odyssey or similar 1M class, many locals now
use a Hitec HS422BB on rudder to achieve higher performance, and the dual
oilite bearings whilst preventing slop, do not rust.

Hitec winch servo =   English Metric
Torque 4.8/6.0v :  161 / 201 oz. 11.6 / 14.5 g.
http://www.hitecrcd.com/Servos/hs725.htm
or again the more expensive lower powered Futaba S5801 winch
Other specialty winch servos whose web sites will give you the comparisons
for their winches to the above HS 725BB =
http://www.users.bigpond.com/rmgsw/
http://www.whirlwindwinches.co.uk/

No free lunches if you want your boat to come home under RC guidance.
