I saw a Victoria yacht for the first time today at our club and was
surprised that there was no jib luff rope (wire/cord whatever) and the
luff wasn't even straight so excess material doubled back into a rough
curve and flapped around in the wind. I know the victoria is a well
regarded boat and can't see how a yacht with a jib like this can be
effective to windward so two questions:

is there something wrong with the construction of this particular jib

is there an accepted fix to improve windward performance.

The original sails aren't even worth using unless you've got
absolutely nothing else.  That's pretty-much the common concensus, I
think.  The leech of the main will curl over, too, after a little
sailing.

The cheapest solution, other than making your own, is the Mariner
Sail's sail kit.  One evening with some tape - all done :)  The best
solution is a set of pro sails from any of the manufacturers.....
