Hi there,
not sure if this is the correct place to post this. What is the secret to
this dark art.
I've done 2 models now, and EVERY time I lay the planks on the hull I
eventually get to the situation where the planks need to be bent severely
sideways as well as round the hull, especially near the bow.
I read quite a bit about this and this is not mentioned. I taper the planks
both forward and aft, and am constantly measuring and checking, but from
about 3/4 s of the way down the hull the same old problem rears is head. Do
I want the planks to reach all the way forward to aft or should some taper
to nothing before they get to the bow.
Are there any good books on this or is there a web site with advice, and
pictures? I know others must have had the same question as planking model
ship hulls is the biggest reason why folks do not complete models.
Hope someone can help
Cheers

There has been quite a lot written about this in various magazines etc,
But.....
Don't try and bend the planks sideways . That is a no-go.
Start from the top and work down.
Allow the planks to follow the natural curve of the hull.
As soon as the won't, run them into the plank above by cutting the ends at
a diagonal.
if you get any gaps, don't worry, most ships, especially period ones, put in
"filler" planks.
The rub down smoothly.
The best is to then put a second run of thin planks over the first ones,
using a slighty different "run"
Good luck.

Not strictly kosher.
But to achieve a precise and good looking planking I used a black w/proof
biro (ballpoint) to draw the plank lines on the bare deck wood. After that,
you apply you varnish and presto, it looks fantastic.
Try it on some scrap similar to your final wood. You'll find it did as I
found our look much better than most other than really professional decks
