I like the challenge of scratch building, think it makes the hobby much more
enjoyable.
Was going to try kit but I need practice with wood cutting, measuring etc.
so
think I'll keep on course with a simple v hull for starters.
I was thinking of steam and something like that boat you see in the popeye
cartoons, kind
of open cockpit steamer. But since I have a couple of gas engines available
and not being used, I'll stick with those for now.
Have been playing around with the HPI MT 4 WD racer I got.
Have gotten practice starting and running nitro engine, it's got a screamer,
bitch to tune though.
Already spent too much on it that I was saving for a heli, so
it will be on the selling block soon maybe.

Hey JS ! .
You want to build from scratch , why not build one that is famous in
your area ...An Air Boat ! . They are the only ones I build , My latest
one is 36"L with a 15" beam I use a Futuba Attact with 2 servos, Loads
of fun,I spent all togather a month an half to finish , It has a double
lamanated  hull ( solid wood no plywood here ) . Twin rudders, I like to
stay a little underpowered I use a .15 engine , don’t want it to get
away from me,R/C units =ain’t cheap=haha.
The glue I use mostly is Gorilla Glue ,it is about the strongest glue I
have ever used.
I  even make my own props , Mo. Black Walnut about a 15° pitch .
You will need a table saw , a band saw , lots of sandpaper.
I’m hopeing this winter that it snows , so i can take it out in the
back yard an run it on the snow,,,,try that with a V-hull ,,haha.
So build you an Airboat , should be some close to you there in S Fl. or
goto Google an put in Air Boat, to get an idea on design, I been
building them for the last 25 yrs, every time i build one they get a
little bigger ,
The one before this one I put 2 plastic tubes on each side for roman
candles , I used an R/C unit from a car to light them up ( 2 R/C units)
looked good at night on the lake zipp’n along wth roman candles going
off , great for the 4th july.

Wow that roman candle thing sounds neat.
Airboat hull would be an easier build for me I guess.
Most have disappeared because there a alot of limitations now on running
them in
the everglades, but I'm gonna consider one. Probably can run it in the
canal.
Do have a HPI .15 car engine I could use.
I have access to local carpenter hall, so I'm hoping I'll get some help
along the way.
Post a pic of yours on the rc binairies newsgroup, Like to see it.

Sorry , no can do on the pic ,don’t have any , an with webtv no way to
post one......But, I will leave my sig on to my webpage you can go to
bottom of the page an see a real one its called The Alaskan, one bad
airboat !
On my model I use white pine {from Lowes} it is easyer to work with an
glues up good,I get a 2x8x8 an rip it edge ways
at about 3/32 for the hull , not the whole 2x8 though just enough for
the hull.
I start with the bottom first, precut the strips to over lenght about 2"
, the bottom is the tricky part if you screw it up nothing else will be
right, you have to have everything in place before you start to glue it
up , so here is the way I do it..

lay out enough strips to what ever width you want then add 1 more strip
, always go over, cut to size later.

Second layer the same , if you have a wood work table  nail a stop board
on it , peace of scrap 1 by.

Butt the strips to it ,first layer.find the lenght center , this is were
you will lay the first top strip when you start glueing.

you will need 2 pieces  of wood 1x2 an 1x3 X 17" , on the 1x2 drill 2
holes for 2 -3" screws at the end, this will be your clamp ,

Now comes the tricky part....be quick here an don t  stop,, pour your
glue out into a cup get a 1" paint brush, I use Tilebond Exterior
glue,,,glue all the strips then lay the others on top , start in the
center an work out on the top layer,,,now with out stoping get the 1x2
an screw it 20" up from the stop board snug tight , now get the 1x3 an
raise the front part an put the 1x3 under it on the very edge.
Now don’t touch for 24hrs let it set good
when you take everything apart it will stay that way .
There is the bottom of the hull , looks kinda like a sledge don‘t it.
from there just build up to finish.
If i was to put a .40 or bigger engine on it I would proably have toput
wings on it,

One nice thing about it you can always say i made it all by my self from
a piece of 2x8.

Mine is painted Blue hull , inside White, with Red rudders ,seat
,platform where fuel tank an r/c unit is, I got a action figure from toy
store to put in the seat ,,,,Looks like Horiato Kane flying down the
river.:-)

I get a lot of fun out of mine, its built tough so it will be here for a
long time.

Just link on below an at the bottom of the page is the pic of The
Alaskan.
