I am thinking of playing with hydrofoils just to see what
can be done.  I'll probably use an outrunner equivalent to a
.40 and a surface drive. I'm not sure how large a hull will
be needed.  nor do I have a clue as to the size of the foils
or their angle of attack.  Does anyone have any experience
or knowledge of relevant resources?  TIA.

Hey'

From my experience I believe it would much better to get a hull made from
fiberglass or better, carbon fiber. a .40 running with 40 to 60 percent
nitro with a surface drive will need a tried and true hull that is VERY WELL
BUILT!
I suggest you look at http://www.aeromarinerc.com/
or some company that has the same good rep for hulls.... I hope this helps,

You can run an outrunner by all means, depending on how big you want to
run the boat will depend on what motor you want to use however.  I run
a small (18inch)mono hull with a 400 sized high KV outrunner which goes
pretty good.  If you want to run a hydro, you could start off small to
get a feel for it and work your way up.  Start with a 1/10th scale
hydro that you can easily build from balsa and strengthen the old
fashioned way with dope then add a bit of paint and a clear and there
is your hull, then you could start shopping around for a larger 600
sized outrunner or something like that from the many plane suppliers
around.  Even though mine is high KV, I am limited on the size of props
to run, lower KV motors will allow you to run bigger props on more cells
which equates in a lot of torque.  I have seen monos running on 2200KV
inrunners that absolutely fly on 10 Cells.
