Which transmitters and receivers are you guys running in your boats?
What are your likes and dislikes?

I'm currently using a Futaba 3PK with the 2.4GHZ Fasst module and R603FS
receivers.  Highly recommend this set up.

Some of the guys around here are using the Spektrum and are having a LOT of
trouble. Seems when the lake is below where they are standing, the signal
won't dip down to the water level or something. Serious range problems.  I
use a JRXS3 synthesized radio. No troubles.

Yep, I tried Spektrum 2.4GHZ and was having glitches.

Since I've switched over to the Futaba 2.4GHZ Fasst system, I haven't
had any problems - touch wood.

Both my Sons run JRXS3 40MHz radios on their boats with no problems.

I'm also looking to buy.  I only "play" with boats - planes
are my main hobby.  I was leaning toward the Spektrum DX7
and using the 6000 receiver in my boat.  Now I'm wondering
if such a setup might have the same problems you have had.

if you have the aerial pointed at the model I believe you get this
problem, the simple cure is to have the TX aerial vertical rather than
coming straight out of the TX as in a conventional TX, I could be wrong
but I don't have a set to confirm it

Your observation is correct.  The radiation pattern of the monopole antenna
has minimum signal (transmit and receive) in the direction the monopole is
pointing (there is a null).

I wrote Spektrum online and they told me that they do not recommend
using their systems for boats. I wrote a similar thread to this one in
rcuniverse and a few of them were using Spektrum, but I wanted to make
sure there were no hangups. I use JR and Futaba on my airplanes and I
like both of their systems. I am wanting to setup one radio I can use
on multiple boats with good reception and compatibility.
