hello
im kinda new to rc boating, iv built one boat before from my own plans,
this was jut to get a feel of the hobby, see if i like it. now im
hooked. iv got the plans for the 72 offshore mono and i have scaled it
down to 40", 72 was way too big and expensive for me to handle. now i
was looking at the plans and im wondering wether i need chines the far
end of each side of the hull to deflect water. if i add them will they
effect the boats turning performance?

I'm not sure what you mean by chines. The chine of a boat is just the
line where the bottom meets the sides and this boat, if built correctly
should have spray rails there. The bottom goes on first and then the
sides should be put on so the hang below the bottom by about 1/16 to
1/8". then you fill the area created with epoxy and microballoons to
create the spray rails. If you mean strakes on the bottom of the boat
which are used to create lift, I would suggest not putting them on
initially til you try the boat without them. You can always add them
later. Doug

The strakes also give you lateral stability so it doesn't skip sideways!!

Lateral stability is not what strakes are meant for. They are primarily
meant for lift. If you need lateral stability you should put a turn fin
on it. Doug

They are not absolutely necessary. They are there to push the water out
away from the boat and keep it from possibly climbing up the side of
the boat and getting inside. They may also help the boat to turn, but
that's not really why they're there. I originally had mine the full
length of the boat, but later removed all but about 18" at the rear
portion of the boat. Doug
