Is a piece of plate glass any use as a surface plate? It looks to be about 8mm thick. I know someone who's getting rid of a fish tank and realised I could do with something a bit flatter than my workbench surface but not necessarily the last word in accuracy.

I've been seeing these lately on ebay, but nobody ever seems to open up the box. I'm curious whether these are new tools or recycled ones. Has anyone who can tell the difference opened them up for comparisons?

Not counting the year or so they sat partially built on the shelf, but finally they are put together. Now painting them is another issue. That will probably never happen, but at least I don't have to worry about losing any pieces over time.

I've got an American design for a gantry crane. Very nice design by all accounts but it's all in US steel specifications. Most are easily translated but the main RSJ (to use the generic term) is speciifed as a "6" 12.5 lb/ft beam". Machinerys Handbook fleshes out the detail

I use x-acto knives in my HS graphics class to cut stencils. Where can I buy #1 knives by the dozen and #16 blades? I thought Home Depot but they had a Stanley for $4. I've been searching Ebay w/o luck. Thanks, Ron
