--ISTR reading somewhere that a steam turbine doesn't surpass the
efficiency of a reciprocating steam engine until it's big enough to produce
something like 50hp. Can someone cite a reference for this? I've head this
figure often but someone said 'prove it' the other day so I'm ...

Have the Elf and Safety been rumbled at last?02 Aug 2007 11:59 GMT5
Just listened to Beeb radio 4, whilst having a late mid morning
tea-break (12.45ish).   It was so sad, poor old E&S spokesperson
complaining that their budget had been severely pruned, they've had to
reduce the numbers of their Stasi, etc etc.   I was crying into my tea
Adding digital scale to tailstock02 Aug 2007 08:29 GMT4
I recently aquired my Myford M-Type.  It has only one vernier scale
and that is on the cross slide.  In the current issue of Engineering
in Miniature, there is an article on fitting a linear scale to a
milling machine.  The author talks about and shows a picture of a
Arizonamodels OX-5 Engine Detail Kit02 Aug 2007 07:17 GMT2
Anyone thinking about buying this "detail kit" should be aware that it
comprises only four pieces of laser-cut wood and some drawings and photos.
Nothing resembling the model shown at the Arizonamodels web site.
WWI Vehicles02 Aug 2007 06:05 GMT1
In preparing for our new book on WWI modeling to 1/72 scale a few
questions have come up. Perhaps someone here can help?
The RPM kits of the Renault FT 17 include the Smoke Generating Tank,
the American M1917 Six-Ton Tank and the TSF. Did any/all of these see

Does anyone have any hints on getting good coverage of yellow paint? I
am so sick of having to paint... and paint... and paint to get good
coverage.

What do you use to simulate water? Why do you like that product?
Please describe how you apply it?
Ping Kelly Voyles - A-7 parking configuration01 Aug 2007 22:20 GMT3
Hi Kelly,
can you tell me how A-7s were usually parked?  Did they have flaps and slats
drooped or retracted?

Submarine Diorama01 Aug 2007 20:17 GMT18
All,
I have 3 submarine models in 1/700 scale and I want to do a
waterfront/pier diorama.  Finding the correct scale materials for this has
proved difficult.  I thought of using model railroad stuff as part of it.
jargon question on workholding?01 Aug 2007 20:02 GMT1
I have a dim memory that in engineering a distinction
is made between holding work such that it truly
cannot move (e.g. an object held in a bench vice cannot
rotate round a vertical axis, since the jaws are in the

Artillery sighting poles - how used01 Aug 2007 01:28 GMT6
Does anyone know how the red and white striped poles depicted in both allied
and German artillery kits were used?
I'm sure I saw something about "back sighting", but what this is or how it
works I don't know.
