Found an old prewar Lionel 1661E locomotive that was in rough shape, trying
to get it running again.  Among the many problems is the armature windings
are "grounding out" to the armature iron, which gives the electricity a
short circuit (through the motor shaft to the sheet metal ...

When I first began construction on my 4 x 8 G&D, I bought a diesel and
started buying freight cars every month when the old SS check came in.
Now I have three different types of couplers on my cars and diesels.

My Lionel-Ives 1661E has just a smidge of brush left.  I ordered a set and
they don't fit.  I discussed it with someone quite knowledgable (he restores
Lionel trains semi-professionally) and he said there is only one size.  The

Has anyone substituted a coil cord for the flat cable that is used to
connect the handheld to the base station? Are the connectors the standard
telephone type?

I bought an Athearn Denver Rio Grande when it came out.  I noticed on
Athearn's homepage it stated it has been discontinued.  Anyone know the
reason why this would be?  Did they sell out then discontinue the

Anyone know of one? I've got one painted as Cotton Belt 20370. The
ORER for my year (1970) says that Cotton Belt didn't have anything by

I think this was mentioned in an earlier post, but if you haven't already,
check out the pictures of the diesels in the south west themed layout in the
current Model Railroader.  WOW!  And the guy is from Europe.  Very artful
job and great photography.
